We’re looking forward to introducing you to Audrey Hines. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Audrey, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Crochet. I am an office manager at a large furniture store. My job consist of schedules, deadlines, orders, and lots of problem solving. So when I get home after a long day, I like to start a new project or finish one to take pictures for my website or Instagram.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Audrey and I am from Adamsville, Atlanta, Ga. My mother taught me how to crochet when I was 7 years old. I started EMPRESSOFATLANTA IN 2020 during the COVID pandemic. Then I was just making masks but I have moved onto crochet clothing and others items for people’s enjoyment. We like to say we make wearable art.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My mother taught me the most about work. I watched her work in many different industries until she created a business for herself. She would also create side jobs to help with the bills. She is a very business oriented person.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I did give up for a while. I was discouraged because all the wonder and whimsy that I felt like my crochet items had weren’t appreciated by others. I was told that I was charging too much, nobody would pay that amount for your work.
Once I got those people’s opinions out of my head, I started again and I restructured my thinking on success and progress.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I hold the golden rule very close to my heart and use it for how to treat people. I am beginning to think I am naive for this because it seems nobody else does this anymore. Being from Atlanta, I have watched the environment go from friendly people saying hi just because they passed you on the street to now, Atlanta being know for running into scammers. No matter what, I will always hold the Golden Rule close to my heart. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, I hope people have many stories about me that contain lessons, laughter and love. I don’t have one particular story I would like told, because I cannot think of one, but if people remembered I made them laugh, feel welcomed, and taught them something that would be wonderful.
