I started my journey with very little other than a strong work ethic, a desire to provide for my family, and a belief that excellence and consistency could change my circumstances. Early in my career, I learned business the hard way through long hours, setbacks, failures, and lessons that could not be learned in a classroom. I built and operated multiple businesses over the years, including running gas stations for more than two decades, which taught me discipline, cash flow management, customer service, and the realities of entrepreneurship.
My transition into insurance and financial services came from a desire to help people protect what they worked hard to build. Over the past 28+ years, I have built the Derek Campbell Agency into a full-service firm offering property & casualty insurance, life insurance, annuities, retirement planning, long-term care, and estate planning solutions. Along the way, I experienced both success and hardship including financial pressure, rebuilding phases, and moments that required faith, resilience, and recommitment to purpose.
Today, I serve as Founder and CEO of the Derek Campbell Agency and the Executive Circle, where my focus is not just on selling products, but on building people, systems, and legacy. I work with families, business owners, and professionals to help them protect income, grow wealth, and make informed financial decisions. I also mentor agents and entrepreneurs, helping them move from potential to performance through structure, discipline, and accountability.
My story is one of persistence, faith, and long-term vision. Every chapter both the victories and the challenges—has shaped how I lead today. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been a smooth road. Like many long-term entrepreneurs, I have faced seasons of uncertainty, financial pressure, and the responsibility of carrying others while still trying to move the business forward. Building businesses from the ground up meant learning through trial and error making decisions without perfect information and absorbing the consequences when things did not go as planned.
One of the biggest challenges was navigating cash flow and growth during difficult economic periods. There were moments of rebuilding after setbacks, including financial strain, operational restructuring, and having to restart with renewed discipline and focus. In addition, transitioning across industries from operating physical businesses to financial services required learning new regulations, compliance standards, and systems while still serving clients at a high level.
Another challenge was leadership itself learning how to build teams, develop people, and create systems that could operate without constant hands-on involvement. That evolution required humility, patience, and a willingness to change old habits.
These obstacles strengthened my resolve and refined how I lead today. They taught me the importance of structure, consistency, accountability, and faith. Each challenge reinforced that sustainable success is built over time, not overnight, and that adversity when handled correctly becomes one of the greatest teachers in business and life.
