Today we’d like to introduce you to Donielle Williams Collins.
Hi Donielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a military brat, I grew up constantly starting over. New cities, new schools, new faces. I learned early how it feels to walk into unfamiliar spaces and not quite know where you belong. But I also learned how powerful it is when someone makes you feel seen, welcomed, and safe in those moments. That stayed with me. It shaped how I connect with people and ultimately how I practice.
I attended Xavier University of Louisiana for undergrad and completed my dental training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I then completed a pediatric residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, where I received advanced training in caring for children of all ages, including those with special healthcare needs. During that time, I also earned my Master of Public Health, which shaped how I think about care beyond the operatory, focusing on access, education, and long-term outcomes for families and communities.
When I entered private practice in 2020, I quickly recognized a gap. While the clinical dentistry was often excellent, the overall experience didn’t always match that same level of care. Visits could feel rushed, transactional, and, for many children, overwhelming. I knew there was an opportunity to create something more intentional, where how a child feels is just as important as the care they receive. That realization led me to build my own practice.
From the ground up, I designed a space that reimagines pediatric dentistry through a more elevated, hospitality-driven lens. Every detail, from the welcome experience to the way we communicate with children, was intentionally crafted to feel calm, personalized, and supportive.
Today, I lead a practice that blends high-level clinical care with a boutique, concierge-style experience. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch children who once felt anxious walk in with confidence and even excitement.
More than anything, this journey has been about shifting expectations and showing that pediatric dentistry can feel different, more intentional, more beautiful, and more connected to the families we serve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a Black woman in this field, I’ve learned that sometimes you’re expected to prove yourself before you’re ever given the chance. I can vividly remember a high school teacher telling me I would never become a doctor and that I should instead look forward to being a “basketball mom.” In that moment, it was discouraging, but it also lit something in me. What was meant to limit me became fuel. It sharpened my focus, strengthened my belief in myself, and ultimately shaped the path I chose to pursue. I didn’t just earn a doctorate. I went on to become board-certified in my specialty.
Opening a practice from the ground up comes with a steep learning curve. I went from focusing solely on patient care to running a business and leading a team. There were moments of uncertainty, especially early on, where I had to trust my vision even when things weren’t fully clear. One of the biggest challenges has been staying committed to doing things differently. It would have been easier to follow a traditional model, but creating a more elevated, experience-driven practice required intention, patience, and conviction. I’ve had to continuously come back to my “why,” especially in moments of doubt.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Grin Gallery Pediatric Dentistry?
At its core, my practice is about reimagining what pediatric dentistry can feel like.
We provide comprehensive pediatric dental care, but what truly sets us apart is the experience we’ve built around that care. Grin Gallery is where a children’s art gallery meets a boutique dental experience. From the moment families walk through our doors, everything is designed to feel calm, intentional, and elevated. That idea guided the entire design of our space. We’ve taken a hospitality-driven approach, where the environment, communication, and pacing of each visit are just as important as the clinical outcome.
We specialize in caring for children of all ages, including those with dental anxiety and special healthcare needs. My training allows us to offer a wide range of services, including sedation dentistry when appropriate, but always with a focus on meeting each child where they are and building trust first. One of the things that is most meaningful to me is our dedicated sensory room, intentionally designed for children with autism and sensory sensitivities. It allows us to meet these patients in a way that feels safe, regulated, and respectful of their needs, which can completely change their relationship with dental care.
What we’re known for is creating an experience that feels different. It’s more personal, more thoughtful, and more in tune with both the child and the parent. We’re not a high-volume, rushed environment. We take our time, we explain, and we connect. Parents often tell us they feel the difference immediately, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.
More than anything, I want readers to know that pediatric dentistry doesn’t have to be something families dread. It can feel calm, positive, and even enjoyable. That shift in experience is what we’re here to create.
