Today we’d like to introduce you to Umbar Saaed.
Hi Umbar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Umbar Saaed — a brand that was born from a very personal place: a deep love for South Asian heritage and a desire to reinterpret it for women like me living away from home.
I launched the brand in November 2024, but the journey really started much earlier. I’ve always been drawn to craftsmanship — the kind that lives in the hands of artisans, in old textiles, and in heirloom pieces passed down through generations. At the same time, I saw a gap in the market, especially in the U.S., where South Asian women often had to choose between heavily traditional outfits or overly westernized interpretations. There wasn’t much in between that felt modern, refined, and still deeply rooted.
That’s where Umbar Saaed came in — a space where tradition meets innovation.
I started small and very intentionally. Each piece is 100% handmade, and I work closely with artisans across South Asia — from zardozi to resham specialists — making sure every design carries a story. We don’t mass produce, and we don’t recreate sold-out pieces. That slow fashion mindset is at the core of everything we do.
What’s been incredibly humbling is how quickly the brand has grown. Within just a few months of launching, we were already featured on local news in Pakistan, appeared on well-known morning shows, and even had our designs showcased in TV dramas. We’ve also been featured in an Indian fashion magazine, which was a really special moment — seeing the brand resonate across borders so early on.
At the same time, we’ve built a strong and growing community internationally, especially in the U.S. and U.K., where women connect deeply with the idea of wearing something that feels like home, yet looks effortlessly modern.
Today, we’re still growing and evolving, but staying true to our roots. For me, Umbar Saaed is more than just clothing — it’s about creating a sense of identity, a feeling of home, and giving women something that feels both timeless and uniquely theirs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all — it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s the reality behind most brands, especially ones built with intention.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a slow fashion brand in a fast-paced world. We’re 100% handmade, which means timelines are dependent on artisans, not machines. There have been moments where delays were unavoidable — whether due to weather conditions like floods back home, supply chain disruptions, or even shipping and customs issues. Managing customer expectations while staying true to quality has been a constant balancing act.
Another challenge has been operating across countries. Running a U.S.-based brand with production rooted in South Asia comes with its own complexities — time zones, logistics, communication gaps, and ensuring consistency in craftsmanship from afar. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t always see.
There’s also the challenge of building trust as a new brand. When you’re just starting out, especially in fashion, people are hesitant — and rightly so. It takes time to prove your quality, your reliability, and your vision. Every order, every interaction, every piece we send out carries that responsibility.
And then there’s the pressure of doing things differently. Choosing not to mass produce, not to restock sold-out designs, and not to compromise on craftsmanship — those decisions aren’t always the easiest from a business perspective, but they’re important to me and to what the brand stands for.
That said, every challenge has shaped us. It’s made the brand stronger, more resilient, and more intentional. And honestly, seeing how far we’ve come in such a short time — from launching to being recognized across different platforms and countries — makes every obstacle worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Umbar Saaed, what I do goes beyond just designing clothes — I build stories, experiences, and pieces that carry meaning.
I specialize in modern South Asian couture and pret, with a strong focus on handcrafted, slow fashion. Every piece is 100% handmade, created in collaboration with skilled artisans using traditional techniques like dabka, zardozi, resham, gota, and hand embellishment. At the same time, I’m very intentional about keeping the aesthetic minimal, refined, and wearable — something that fits seamlessly into the lifestyle of women living globally.
What we’re known for is that balance. Our designs aren’t overwhelming, but they’re detailed. They’re not trend-driven, but they feel current. There’s a quiet luxury to the brand that resonates with women who want something timeless rather than something disposable.
I’m especially proud of how we’ve built this brand with integrity from day one. We don’t mass produce, we don’t recreate sold-out designs, and we don’t rush craftsmanship just to meet demand. In a world of fast fashion, choosing to stay slow — and still growing — is something I take a lot of pride in.
Another thing I’m really proud of is the connection we’ve built with our audience. In such a short time, the brand has reached women across the U.S., U.K., and beyond — and to see them choose “Umbar Saaed” for meaningful moments in their lives is incredibly special. We’ve also been fortunate to receive early recognition through media features, TV, and international platforms, which has helped validate the vision.
What truly sets us apart is our intentionality— in design, in production, and in how we show up. Every piece is limited, every detail is considered, and every collection is created with a deeper story in mind. It’s not just about what you wear — it’s about how it makes you feel.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
At its core, Umbar Saaed is about purpose — preserving craftsmanship, supporting artisans, and creating pieces that carry meaning.
It’s for women who want to stay connected to their roots while embracing a modern identity — without having to choose between the two.
And honestly, we’re just getting started. There’s so much more to come, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who’s been part of the journey so far.
