Life & Work with Alurne of Montgomery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alurne.

Hi Alurne, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Musics always been a part of me. I was born in Korea and in my culture you have a big first birthday party. The baby is placed in front of dozens of items like a stethoscope, hammer, and more. I picked up a mic. As soon as I could walk and talk I was always singing and dancing. I started playing piano at around age 5. Clarinet at 12. It’s always been who I was. I started writing music during an especially difficult time in middle school which was the pandemic. I don’t know if it was because I was bored or due to my poor mental health but it really flowed. I never stopped. I really discovered music way my passion around freshman year of high school. I transferred to Idyllwild Arts Academy my junior year and played my first live shows as a songwriter. I had played a lot of live shows as a clarinetist but this felt really different and real. I had only played shows in opportunities my school had given me till winter break of my junior year when I played a show in nashville. Now I have played more cool shows and am supporting Pretty Jane in their San Diego stop at House of Blues. I also recently won the Mount of Angels battle of the bands and will be recording at Paramount Studios. Soon I will be a senior in high school and I can’t want to see what is to come!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely struggled a lot with my mental health. Being a teen indie artist means a lot of late nights and early mornings sending emails and making videos. It also means having a lot of people depend on me whether it’s my band or the venue. It caused a lot of anxiety and still does. But playing and sharing my music is really worth it. I also struggle a lot with imposter syndrome since when I started “Alurne” people at my old school found it and I was bullied. Still I don’t think I deserve this and I don’t think I deserve the opportunities I am given.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a songwriter, it’s as simple as that! I’m proud of the people I am able to connect with and make a difference for!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think it’s all about being authentic and actually wanting to learn more not about the art but about the people!
