We recently had the chance to connect with Yvonne Dragon & Randall Dragon and have shared our conversation below.
Yvonne & Randall, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Randall and I are most proud of building our family and our business. People see the end results- great teenagers and interesting impactful projects but people don’t see the constant balance it takes to pour into both of these. Also people don’t understand the sacrifice over 10 years- we have passed on opportunities to grow our business quicker to pour into our kids. We also sacrificed financially to make sure our team was paid on time. We are proud say we have never missed a payroll or our kids’ school or sport activities.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The Dragon Group has been creating impact for over 11 years.
Several aspects make the Dragons’ story particularly compelling: Entrepreneurial partnership: As a married couple, we blended personal and professional strengths to build a company with a purpose beyond profits. Diversity and inclusion: We lead one of the few Black-owned sustainability and Construction Management firms in the Southeast and intentionally cultivate a diverse team. Community impact: Our internship and mentorship programs are designed to broaden access to sustainability science and construction careers for underrepresented students- 70 Interns and counting. Resilience and growth: Over more than a decade, we weathered economic changes including pandemic, industry shifts and tariffs. In a time where climate urgency, infrastructure demand, and equity are more important than ever, we stand out not just as business leaders, but as catalysts for transformational change while building a legacy for their family.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Our parents influenced both of us. We both recognized the power of partnership early on. Randall’s parents partnered to make a new life in America after leaving Grenada and my parents ran an engineering firm together for over 15 years.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Yvonne- Your ideas are what will make the world a better place. Your ideas inspire others.
Randall-Problem solving is your superpower. That coupled with your ability to listen will take you far.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would say that family matters to both of us. Whether personally or professionally, we not only stress the importance of family, but we center our lives around it. We currently renovating our home to entertain family and friends more. Yvonne has dabbled in design for years and so we are making it official and launched @dragondesigns11 to document our renovation journey.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People think that is legacy is just about recognition, power or money. Legacy is really about creating values, connectedness and impact that is an example for others to follow and will extend well beyond your own life. We have led high profile – high impact projects like Morehouse College, Central Library, Russell Innovation Center of Entrepreneurship, Pittsburgh Yards, and Centennial Yards. Randall is passionate about Project Management in the Commercial Real Estate space, our focus will be on this part of our business moving forward,
