Meet Kev Lawrence of NYC / ATL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kev Lawrence.

Hi Kev, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After my active duty status in the military, in 2000 I went to New York City, N.Y. to work in the music entertainment business. I landed a job working for Hector Aviles as a assistant to the the assistant A&R administration executive and in the A&R department with Leeza Brunson at Def Jam music group. I stayed there for a couple of years learning the in’s and out’s of the entertainment business. I was grateful to have learned so much so that I can take with me and evolve myself there or anywhere else I may go to. In 2002, I began working as an assistant for uncle Ralph McDaniels of Video Music Box TV in NYC.

While working at Video Music Box TV on WNYC TV I began to understand TV and video production, content creation for TV, filming, as well as video personality / radio personality work. Learning radio personality work helped me to join a radio program named “Thermal Soundwaves Radio” on WHCR 90.3 FM which was terrestrial radio as well as online. I have DJ-ed, hosted events, and coordinated concerts, and more in and out of America learning more being thankful more and more. I created businesses from production companies, tech learning classes, to mobile food carts since over the latter years; and I love creating more opportunities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not always a smooth road. Some of the struggles along the way were people not taking me seriously for whatever preconceived reasons they have about me, me not wanting to partake is extra things that were not ethical and or up to my moral standards, and gatekeepers that were negatively gatekeeping. Some people sadly feel threatened if you want to do positive things that may make them feel as if you are trying to do better than them. Even if they never wanted to do that same thing at all. For the most part, it is usually the insecurities from others (and sometimes oneself) that are the struggles.

Another thing is not seeing or being around my family and friends as much as before. In order to chase dreams, there will be times where you are not present at certain functions are date nights in which people may feel that you feel that you are too good for people. Relationships can be tested and more. I went through it. However, the one’s that were meant to be present in my life stayed because they understood and the love was strong.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a TV personality/ radio personality gentleman for Video Music Box TV and Thermal Soundwaves Radio which is played throughout cities in America and internationally. I am a DJ , owner of “The Jerk Chicken Spot” LLC food cart business, concert coordinator/ stage manager, coding technology instructor, and more. I feel I am most known for my TV and Radio personality jobs. I am proud of all of them however, I am very proud of teaching the youth (and adults) robotics coding in tech. Helping people learn the beginning stages of it, how fun it can be, and how someone can actually learn more to create their own tech business was very joyful for me.

I guess what can set me apart from many others is that I genuinely are happy seeing other people winning with no expectations of anything in return. Would I be grateful for things, of course. However, I really just love seeing good people win.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has played a role with me at times with being at the right place and the right time to meet the right people. However, after luck got me there or such, my skills and characters and my will to be the best that I can takes over. It’s like praying all day to whomever. Prayers are good, however if you are not doing the actual work and doing all the tasks needed to prepare you for that moment, prayers and luck wont hit the same.
