Today we’d like to introduce you to Gayatri Ganeshan.
Hi Gayatri, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The story of GN Collections is rooted in health and connection. The brand represents what the industry ignored. Brown skin. GN curates and custom designs luxurious press-on nails that are melanin-friendly. Two summers ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes — nails become brittle and I had to just like that, stop my routine appointments with my nail artist. My nails used to tell me that life is more than a 9 to 5 hustle. Losing that felt like losing a piece of myself. My art needed an outlet. So I picked up a brush.
I started painting — tiny worlds onto tiny canvases. Madhubani art from India. The geometry of African mud cloth. Scandinavian florals. Japanese Zen. Mexican Talavera. Art that carries history, that carries soul. As a brown skinned woman, I couldn’t understand why there were no dedicated collections for us, that were a true healthier alternative to the salon. So, I paint it for us. I focus on patterns and colors that brighten on our skin and not clash against it. I pair pastels that don’t wash out on brown and warm skin tones.
My clients at pop-up markets loved how these nails told a story of their heritage. Custom orders came. Then a website. Then collections. And because I’m also a scientist — I developed a three-step ritual where adhesive never touches the nail bed. No more brittle nails because of glue. Healthy. Artful. No compromise.
GN Collections wasn’t just built. It was healed into existence.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The brand is a re-imagination of the mundane. There is continuous challenge. I work as a scientist and a corporate manager in pharmaceutical operations along with juggling responsibilities as a divorced mom. This is something I am building with passion and purpose. For the few initial months, I had to try several iterations of the three step application kit- the right ingredients that created a toxin-free and waterproof application system. Development is always ongoing and while at the core of it we stand for clean beauty, sustainability and brown inclusivity, the face of the signature ritual continues to be optimized.
As you know, we’re big fans of GN Collections. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
GN Collections is a luxury, hand-painted nail brand built for women who refuse to be an afterthought. We create true nail extensions — wearable art, not your same old boring press-ons — inspired by world cultures, art history, and the richness of melanin. Every set is painted entirely by hand, never printed, and always reusable. We exist at the intersection of fine art and beauty, and we are unapologetically built for brown girls first.
We specialize in hand-painted, culture- and art-inspired nail extensions that are designed to flatter deeper skin tones and celebrate the beauty of women of color. Our designs draw from antique aesthetics, global cultures, and textiles — resulting in sets that feel like jewelry for your fingertips. I am brown and south Asian and my nails show cultural heritage, bold artistry, and fine, premium craftsmanship that creates mini painting in mini canvases that feel sculpted and as a true nail extension.
We are the only brand offering hand-painted — never printed — luxury nail extensions that are designed with melanin-rich skin tones at the center. Our designs are not trend-chasing. They are art-driven, culture-rooted, and crafted to feel bold expressions on your hand. Our signature “chai nude” color is a customer favorite. Our floral motifs and Latin American art pieces have been sold many times over the past few months.
What does success mean to you?
Success is a mountain I climb everyday. GN is built for customers who didn’t find this anywhere else in the world. I feel success when a customer trusts me to make this for me. I hand-make every set and even though transforming a blank soft gel tip can take sometimes 2 and other times up to 5 hours to make, it is a labor of love. At the heart of it, I am their virtual nail artist when the salon and the rest of the industry failed them. So, when they smile looking at the art and feel unique and regal to own each masterpiece, I feel successful.
