Conversations with Sabrina Yates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Yates.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell into the hair industry while studying at KSU and quickly fell in love with the industry. I went to Aveda in Atlanta and after I graduated I moved back to Columbus Ga to be closer to family. I’ve been doing hair now for 12 years and honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else. The joy I get from making my amazing clients feel like themselves again is unmatched. I am a lived in blonde and extension specialist at Beautique salon and medspa and am working towards becoming a brand educator as well. Along with helping my clients fall back in love with themselves and their hair, I also teach and have an amazing apprentice. Teaching in this field is my second most favorite thing about my career. I love getting to see all the baby stylist come out of their shell and fall in love with hair like I did. I feel really blessed to say that I look forward to getting up and going to work each day and getting to do something I’m so passionate about, I don’t feel like everyone can say that.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Man starting out a new career and in a new city was a little rocky, I didn’t really know anyone here besides family. I basically had to do it the very hard way, a lot of leaving salon flyers in random places with my card attached, staying in the salon every day in the hopes someone would happen to do a walk in, things like that. Once I started getting my regular men’s cut they would then convinced their wives to come see me and then word of mouth took off and I kept building.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in lived in blondes and extensions. I’m known for giving you blonde that will last you longer than the normal 8 weeks but that still has the intentional brightness and placement. I’m most proud of being a “lazy” hair stylist. What I mean by that is, as a busy mom myself, I don’t have time to sit in a salon chair every 6-8 weeks to get my color touched up. I would love if I could but that’s not the case for a lot of women out there. I created this sorta conglomeration of different techniques and foil patterns I’ve learned over the years and made it into a placement system that allows my lived in blondes to get an extra 2-4 weeks of growth so that busy women can actually live their lives instead of living by appointments every 6-8. Hence the “lazy” hair stylist nickname haha

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for finding a mentor or just in general is : find your people. Working for or with people who aren’t always rooting for you is not where you want to be in any aspect of your life, especially in your career. What has worked well for me, is truly just being yourself and wanting to see the person next you on your team win. Everyone in our salon is everyone else’s biggest fan and supporter and to be honest I wish I found this salon family earlier in my career because it really changes the game. Clients also can see when you’re being genuinely yourself and will gravitate towards that because hair is a big investment and they want to feel at ease and comfortable.
