Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliah Aiken.
Hi Aliah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Aliah Aiken is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller from Decatur, Georgia, whose work blends faith, emotional honesty, and contemporary sound. With a natural gift for writing songs that feel both personal and relatable, Aliah creates music that sits at the intersection of healing, identity, and purpose.
Her musical journey began in the DeKalb County band programs at Chapel Hill Middle School and Southwest DeKalb High School, where she grew as a young flutist and began building confidence in her musicianship. Those early experiences helped shape her foundation as an artist and gave her the courage to see music as more than a gift, but as a calling.
Aliah later attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she studied classical flute and voice. Her time in Nashville became a pivotal season of growth, stretching her creatively and sharpening her songwriting voice. It was also at Tennessee State that she met Grammy Award-winning artist and producer Dubba-AA, who would become instrumental in helping cultivate her sound and artistry. Surrounded by like-minded musicians and creatives, Aliah began to further discover who she was as both a writer and an artist.
Today, Aliah’s work reflects a deep desire to create from a place of truth. Whether through music, writing, or storytelling, she hopes to encourage others to heal, reflect, and embrace the process of becoming who God created them to be.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the journey into my artistry has not been easy at all. A large part of my story has been learning how to find my voice after spending so much of my life feeling like I had to silence it.
I grew up in a two-religion household. My father is Muslim, and my mother is Christian, so faith was always present, but it was also something I had to navigate carefully. I remember being a teenager and wanting to be baptized, but I was afraid to say that I wanted to be saved because I did not know how my father would respond. Looking back, I realize that was one of the first places where I learned to hold back what I truly felt.
As I grew older and went to college, I began to discover my voice, but I also became aware of how stifled it had been growing up. There were so many things I did not say, and so many things I felt like I could not say. Instead of speaking them out loud, I internalized them and turned them into music, poetry, and songs. That creative outlet became a safe place for me, but I have also learned that there is nothing quite like finally being able to speak your mind and stand in the truth of who you are.
I gave my life to Christ and was baptized during my junior year of college in 2012. My journey has not been perfect or smooth, but I can honestly say that Christ has kept my mind, carried me through difficult seasons, and brought me through life obstacles that could have broken me. My faith has become the foundation of my healing, my identity, and my artistry.
Because of that, my music is not just about performing or creating something that sounds good. It is about telling the truth. It is about giving language to the things I once kept hidden. It is about healing, becoming, and helping someone else feel seen in their own process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and storyteller from Decatur, Georgia, and at the core of everything I do is a desire to create from a real and honest place. My work is centered around music, faith, healing, and storytelling. I create music that speaks to transformation, identity, and what it looks like to grow through life’s harder seasons while staying rooted in God. I would say I specialize in writing songs that are emotionally honest, relatable, and reflective, while still carrying hope.
I’m also passionate about creating work that extends beyond the music itself. One of the projects I’m most excited about right now is The Uncommon Journal, which is both an upcoming EP and an accompanying journal. That project is very close to my heart because it gives women a space to reflect, heal, and reconnect with Scripture through the love of Christ. I love creating things that not only sound good, but also serve people in a deeper way. Whether it is through a song, a journal prompt, a live performance, or a personal story, I want my work to encourage people to pause, reflect, and believe that transformation is possible.
In addition to my artistry, I’m currently pursuing my master’s degree in Digital Marketing at Wake Forest University. That part of my journey has been really meaningful because it is helping me understand how to merge creativity with strategy. As an independent artist and creative entrepreneur, I am learning how to build my brand with intention, connect with my audience more effectively, and create content that is not only beautiful, but purposeful.
I think I’m known for being genuine in my writing and in the way I present myself as an artist. I never want to create just for the sake of being seen. I want what I make to feel honest, meaningful, and connected to real life. I’m really proud of how much I have grown as a songwriter over the years. Being able to co-write with artists like Evvie McKinney, Dubba-AA, and Anike on “Good 2 Me” was a huge moment for me. Being recognized as a World Entertainment Award-nominated songwriter was also incredibly special because it reminded me that the years of writing, learning, and growing were not in vain.
What sets me apart is that my artistry is deeply personal, but still created with other people in mind. My journey started early, from playing flute in DeKalb County band programs to studying classical flute and voice at Tennessee State University. Those experiences helped shape my foundation as a musician, but my life experiences helped shape my voice as a storyteller. More than anything, I believe what makes me different is that I care deeply about creating from a place of truth. I want people to hear my music, read my words, or experience my work and feel seen, encouraged, and reminded that healing, growth, and purpose are all possible.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Yes — staying in the Word and reading the Bible has been one of the biggest things that helps keep me grounded. My faith is the foundation of how I process life, create, and stay encouraged through different seasons. I also try to keep a journal close by because writing has always been a safe space for me. It helps me clear my mind, process my emotions, and stay connected to what God is teaching me.
One podcast I enjoy is the More to Life Podcast hosted by Anna D. I appreciate content that feels honest, faith-centered, and encouraging, especially when it speaks to growth, purpose, and becoming.
When I need to decompress, I love listening to handpan music or instrumental worship music. There is something about those sounds that helps quiet my mind, put me in a creative space, and keep me in a posture of gratitude. I also enjoy reading How Heaven Invades Your Finances by Jim Baker. Overall, I’m drawn to books, music, podcasts, and tools that help me grow spiritually, stay reflective, and keep my heart in the right place.
