Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Peterson, Jr..
Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into branding started with creating flyers. As an educator preparing to become a father, I needed additional income and leaned into my creativity. That work grew, but eventually became limiting—so I learned early that if you want to sustain something, you have to pivot.
I formalized my work by launching illgraphic Branding and initially focused on logos for small businesses. But as that space became crowded, I refined my positioning. illGraphic Branding became the only firm that offers “more than a logo” by focusing on strategy and foundation.
I continued studying brands like Apple and Nike, applying what makes them sustainable to my own work. That led me to narrow my audience, adjust pricing, and evolve into a brand strategist—working with clients to answer core questions: who are you, who needs to know, how will they find out, and why should they care.
Today, Illgraphic Branding represents more than design. It’s about building strong, intentional foundations that make the creative process more effective and meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I mentioned, it wasn’t a smooth road. But I’ve come to believe that champions adjust—and that’s exactly what this journey taught me. Every time I hit a point of frustration, instead of quitting, I learned to pivot—to find a new way to communicate what I offer in a way no one else was saying it.
The challenges forced me to become more flexible and showed me the real value of positioning. I realized how powerful it is to present your work in a way that reduces alternatives. Over time, Illgraphic Branding became difficult to compare to anything else—not by accident, but by intentionally refining how I positioned and articulated the specific areas I chose to focus on.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I serve as an academic advisor and recruiter at Marquette University, working within the Educational Opportunity Program—a federally recognized TRIO program. My focus is on creating access for first-generation and income-eligible students, and more importantly, making sure they have the financial, academic, and personal support to reach graduation—that’s the real goal.
I’ve been in education for over 13 years and I’m finishing my master’s in Educational Policy and Leadership, graduating next May. At my core, I’m an educator—this is how I serve and what I believe I’m called to do: guide and direct young people.
What sets me apart is how I bring branding and marketing into this space. I’ve learned how to position ideas, and I apply that to education—because getting students to truly buy into learning matters. Education is still one of the most powerful tools we have, and I see it as my role to help students recognize that.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice is simple—don’t quit. If you believe in something, learn to adjust. Pivot when needed, refine your approach, and see it through. If you’ve made the necessary adjustments and it’s still not working, there’s nothing wrong with finding the right exit—but most growth comes from staying with it.
I’ve learned the most by sticking with problems worth solving. Keep bringing positivity, kindness, and solutions into what you do—that’s what keeps you grounded and moves you closer to your purpose.
There will be highs and lows, moments where everything makes sense and moments where nothing does. Navigate both with grace. Pray for steadfastness, fortitude, and the strength to finish what you start. Your time will come—just stay with it.
