Check Out A Joelle Bennett’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to A Joelle Bennett.

Hi A Joelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Movement was once something I loved. Now it is the language I use to build, to teach, and to become.
My journey as a choreographer did not begin with steps, but with curiosity. How does the body tell the truth? How does a young dancer learn to trust their voice inside technique? Over twenty years of training and performance, I have come to understand that choreography is more than arranging movement—it is cultivating identity. It is creating space for others to discover who they are through discipline, risk, and intention.

My foundation was shaped through rigorous study in ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and pointe, and anchored during my time at Spelman College, where artistry and scholarship move together. Studios like McClendon Performing Arts Institute and AREA strengthened my technical precision, but teaching revealed my deeper calling.

Affectionately known as The Dancing Unicorn, I exist at the intersection of strength and imagination. On stage, I pursue storytelling that is grounded and bold. In the classroom, I nurture confidence, musicality, and emotional awareness. My work is not centered on spectacle alone; it is rooted in awakening. I create choreography that invites dancers to embody power and softness, clarity and freedom—so they leave not just stronger, but more self-aware.

Developing young dancers is inseparable from my artistic path. Technique builds the body, but intention builds the artist. Each rehearsal becomes a laboratory of growth where discipline meets self-expression. I challenge my students to move with purpose, to claim space fully, and to understand that excellence is not perfection—it is presence.
As I expand into new creative spaces, my vision remains steady: to build work that bridges performance and mentorship, and to cultivate artists who know their movement carries meaning. Through choreography and guidance, I am shaping more than dances. I am shaping legacy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road — but I think that’s what gave depth to both my artistry and who I am as a person.

Dance taught me discipline very early, but the journey taught me resilience. There were seasons where I questioned myself, moments where opportunities didn’t align the way I hoped, and times where I had to learn how to separate my worth from validation or visibility.

As an artist, especially one who leads with emotion and storytelling, you feel everything deeply. I’ve had to grow through comparison, burnout, fear, and the pressure of constantly evolving while still staying true to myself. But every challenge pushed me closer to understanding my voice, my purpose, and the kind of artist I truly want to be.

The beautiful part is that the struggles refined me instead of hardening me. They taught me how to move with intention, how to trust my instincts, and how to create from a place of truth rather than performance alone.

The Dancing Unicorn was born from that journey — from learning that strength and softness can exist together, and that authenticity will always outlast perfection.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a professional dancer, choreographer, instructor, and creative storyteller. My foundation is deeply rooted in technical training — ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and pointe — but what truly defines my work is the intention behind the movement. I specialize in creating performance experiences that blend strong technique with emotion, musicality, and storytelling. Whether I’m teaching, performing, choreographing, or developing concepts behind the scenes, I want people to feel something honest.

Over time, I’ve also stepped into creative direction roles, helping shape the full visual and emotional world of a project. That has included styling, costuming, movement direction, and building concepts that allow the performance to feel cohesive from beginning to end. I love being involved in the details that help bring a vision to life because dance, to me, extends beyond movement — it’s atmosphere, texture, fashion, storytelling, and presence all working together.

A lot of people know me as The Dancing Unicorn because I bring a balance of strength, imagination, grace, and individuality into every space I enter. My work often lives at the intersection of discipline and freedom. I love honoring the history and foundations of dance while still finding ways to make it feel fresh, human, and expressive.

What I’m most proud of is the growth of my artistry and the impact I’ve been able to have on others through movement. From performing in creative projects and installations to mentoring dancers and building community, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about visibility — it’s about creating work that leaves a lasting feeling.

What sets me apart is that I don’t approach dance as just choreography or aesthetics. I approach it as language. Every movement has intention, every detail has purpose, and every performance is an opportunity to tell the truth in a way words sometimes can’t.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is witnessing growth — especially in young people and artists, in creative spaces, and in ideas that once only existed in my imagination. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about planting a seed, nurturing it with care, and eventually watching it bloom into a fully realized experience.

Working with youth reminds me why creativity matters. Seeing dancers gain confidence, discover their individuality, or push past their own limitations is powerful to witness. I love creating environments where people feel safe enough to explore, take risks, and truly step into themselves. Watching that transformation happen in real time is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.

I’m also deeply fulfilled by building something from the ground up. Whether it’s choreography, a performance concept, styling, or creative direction, I enjoy the entire process — the brainstorming, the refining, the problem-solving, and finally seeing all the moving pieces come together. There’s a special kind of joy in looking at a finished project and remembering it once lived only in your mind.

For me, happiness comes from creation, connection, and seeing vision become reality.
