Check Out Eduardo Castro II’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Castro II.

Hi Eduardo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Ga in 2017 with my wife and I enrolled in the GFA program at Atlanta Technical College. That program was a great introduction to working in film and television and gave me a great baseline knowledge of multiple jobs in the industry. Afterwards I was able to find myself a PA job on an indie film and buddied up with the late sound mixer Fred Storar. He was a big influence and great mentor when I was starting out. He was the first person who taught me how to operate a boom and lav up actors. He was always very motivating and patient with me during our time working together and I owe a big part of where I am today to him and those experiences onset will always stay with me. After a year working off and on sets, I started investing in my own equipment and started to get jobs where I would mix on my own or (OMB). I had been introduced to multiple sound mixers at this point and was welcomed into the community with much acceptance. After putting my name out there as an up and coming sound mixer/boom op, I started getting referred to jobs covering for other sound mixers. After successfully mixing jobs and becoming more reliable and technically adept in my field, more people in the community started to trust that I could deliver and was a competent sound mixer. After six years of doing this full time, I can say I still have a great community here in Atlanta that I can rely on in times of need. Whether that be for equipment, guidance, additional hands or venting. The sound friends I have made along the way have had a big impact on my career and I try to pay it forward anytime I can.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, I feel like I may have gotten into the industry an interesting time. I did my first feature in 2019 as a boom op/Utility for the late Fred Storar. I was eager to get on more sets and jump right into production work. I was getting small, low or unpaid gigs here and there where I was starting to get more experience. In late 2019 I got called for my first decent paying job as a sound mixer that was slated to start around February of 2020. I got the call in the beginning of January that the job was cancelled because of covid. Then we were all stuck at home for about 6 months. That put a damper on my would be career as a soundie in the industry. Around June of 2020 I got my first job back on set as a boom op on an indie project with my buddy Dave Majcher. The ball started rolling after that, There as an influx of work after everyone came back from covid that had the whole town busy. I was way busier than I had been prior and decided to go full time in the Summer of 2020. Things were going pretty good for a couple of years until the SAG and Writers strikes in 2023. Then it seemed like work dried up again for alot of people including myself. I started to learn how to do post audio as a way to diversify what services I offered as a sound mixer and try to offset the lack of location sound. After the strikes, work seemed to “Normalize” back to how it was before the influx we got after coming back from covid. Work has been a steady pattern of peaks and valleys since. With the current state of the world it seems like alot of things are uncertain in regard to the industry. Despite the current state of affairs, I do my best to think positive and keep the same feelings towards production work I had when I first started. While it hasnt been a completely smooth road, it is a road I would go down again and again! I love what I do and wouldn’t change it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
