Community Highlights: Meet Katherine Tuominen of Catalyst Brand Strategy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Tuominen.

Hi Katherine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career in marketing over a decade ago, and I learned early that marketing is never neutral. It has the power to shape perception, build trust, influence culture, and amplify ideas at scale. I have seen how it can be used to promote shallow or even harmful messages, and that made me deeply intentional about the kind of work I wanted to put into the world.

Before founding Catalyst Brand Strategy, I worked across film, fashion, wellness, communications, and digital marketing. Early in my career, I supported marketing initiatives at Fox Film Studios, where I saw the power of storytelling, partnerships, and audience psychology when they are used strategically. I also spent years working with luxury brands, which taught me the importance of positioning, perception, and the small details that make a brand feel memorable, trusted, and distinct.

Over time, I became especially drawn to founders and businesses doing meaningful work in the world, particularly in health, wellness, publishing, and purpose-driven industries. Many had powerful stories, real expertise, and life-changing ideas, but their messaging and visibility did not yet reflect the depth of their work.

That became the foundation for Catalyst Brand Strategy.

I wanted to build an agency that used strategy, storytelling, media, and digital marketing as a force for good. When marketing is done well, it can do more than sell. It can raise awareness, shift conversations, build credibility, and connect people with ideas, services, and support that can genuinely improve their lives.

Today, Catalyst Brand Strategy is a boutique brand, communications, and digital marketing agency built for credibility-led founders and impact-driven brands. We help clients refine their positioning, strengthen their authority, secure meaningful media visibility, and build marketing ecosystems that support both short-term momentum and long-term trust.

What has brought me here is a mix of curiosity, resilience, and a belief that great marketing should never feel hollow. It should reveal the truth of a brand in a way that resonates, captivates, and creates measurable impact.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I also do not think entrepreneurship is meant to be. People say entrepreneurship is personal development multiplied by a thousand, and I firmly believe that is true. Every day brings a new lesson, a new edge, or a new decision that asks you to grow into the next version of yourself.
The first year was the hardest. I learned very quickly that passion and talent are important, but they are not enough on their own. You also need clear contracts, strong systems, healthy boundaries, financial discipline, and the ability to make difficult decisions with integrity. Some of those lessons came at a cost, personally and professionally, but they made me a much stronger founder.
I had to learn how to protect my energy while still leading with generosity. I had to learn that not every opportunity is aligned, not every client is the right fit, and saying no is often what creates space for the right yes. That was a huge shift for me.
There were also the quieter challenges that many founders understand but do not always talk about: carrying the responsibility of a team, navigating uncertainty, trusting your own judgment, and continuing to show up even when things are not unfolding as quickly or neatly as you hoped.
But that is also what makes the journey so rewarding. Growth and learning go hand in hand. Every challenge has sharpened the way I lead, communicate, and serve our clients. I am much more grounded now than I was in the beginning, and Catalyst is stronger because of the lessons we chose to learn from rather than be defined by.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Catalyst Brand Strategy?
What should we know about your business?
Catalyst Brand Strategy is a boutique brand, PR, and communications agency built for credibility-led founders and impact-driven brands. Our clients tend to be people whose work carries weight: health and wellness experts, women’s health innovators, telehealth and biotech-adjacent companies, authors, publishers, and thought leaders working in industries where trust is the actual currency.
We specialize in public relations, media outreach, brand messaging, content marketing, launch and event activations, product seeding, strategic partnerships, ambassador development, and authority-building work like white papers and executive thought leadership. The throughline across all of it is the same: we help substantive founders translate their expertise, story, and values into a brand presence that reflects the calibre of their work and earns them visibility in the rooms that matter.
What we are known for is combining strategic rigour with storytelling craft. A lot of agencies lean one way or the other, all data or all creative. Catalyst pulls both together. Market intelligence, audience psychology, competitive context, and long-term brand vision, paired with messaging that is human, ownable, and emotionally resonant.
What sets us apart is a refusal to chase visibility for its own sake. Attention is easy. Trust is harder, and far more valuable. Our work focuses on what I call credibility architecture: the messaging, media presence, partnerships, proof points, and positioning that allow a brand to be taken seriously by the right people, in the right rooms, over a long horizon. We are particularly known for navigating credibility-sensitive industries like health, wellness, telehealth, women’s health, and publishing, where messaging has to be both compelling and responsible.
Brand wise, I am most proud of the calibre of founders we get to support. Many come to us with profound expertise or powerful lived experience and need help shaping that into a presence that matches the level they actually operate at. Helping a founder finally sound, look, and read at the level of their work is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. I am also proud that Catalyst has stayed intentionally boutique. We take on a small number of clients at a time so we can show up as a real strategic partner rather than another vendor on a roster.
What I want readers to know is this: Catalyst exists for founders building something meaningful who want their marketing to reflect that. We help them move from scattered visibility to aligned authority through earned media, well-placed thought leadership, smart partnerships, and brand messaging that actually lands, so the right message reaches the right people, and the brand they are building compounds in value over time.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say discernment.
In the beginning of my career, I thought success came from saying yes, working harder, and proving I could figure anything out. Over time, I have learned that real success often comes from knowing what to say no to.
Discernment has helped me choose the right clients, build the right team, protect the quality of our work, and make decisions that are aligned with the long-term vision of Catalyst rather than short-term pressure. It has also helped me become a better strategist because great marketing is not about trying every new trending tactic, but about knowing what matters most, how to build trust, and being transparent about what will actually move the needle.
I think that quality has shaped both my leadership and our agency philosophy. We are very intentional about the brands we work with, the strategies we recommend, and the messages we amplify. For me, success is not just growth for its sake but aligned growth through long-term collaborations.
That discernment has allowed Catalyst to build with integrity, serve clients more deeply, and stay focused on work that creates meaningful impact.
