Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Richardson.
Hi Brianna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My creative journey began during therapy. I started writing as a way to process emotions, experiences, healing, and personal growth. What began as a private outlet slowly became something much bigger. Poetry and storytelling gave me a voice during a time when I was learning to better understand myself and navigate life more honestly.
As I continued creating, I began sharing pieces of my work and was surprised by how many people connected with the vulnerability and emotional tones. Those connections inspired me to keep going and eventually build into a platform centered around healing, self-expression, and human connection through art. Today, I use poetry not only to express myself, but to create work that helps others feel seen, understood, and less alone. It definitely gives a voice to the voiceless.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of my journey began during a difficult period in my life, which is what led me to therapy and eventually to writing in the first place. Learning how to be vulnerable, first, with myself and then publicly through my art was one of the biggest challenges. There were times when I questioned whether my work was good enough, whether people would understand it, or whether sharing such personal pieces of myself was even worth it.
Building my ministry of poetry came with the challenges that many independent creatives face: consistency, self-doubt, balancing creativity with everyday responsibilities, and figuring out how to grow a platform organically. Social media can sometimes make it easy to compare yourself to others or feel pressure to constantly create, but I’ve learned to stay grounded in why I started. At the core of everything is healing, connection, and authenticity, and remembering that has helped me keep moving forward even during difficult moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
By day, I work as a engineer (i.e., civil, mechanical, environmental), a career that has shaped the way I think, solve problems, and move through the world. Engineering has taught me discipline, resilience, adaptability, and how to approach challenges with both logic and creativity. As a Black woman in engineering, I’m proud to work in a space where representation still matters and where simply showing up authentically can inspire others who may not often see themselves reflected in the field.
Engineering sharpened my ability to think deeply and communicate intentionally, while poetry gives me a way to process experiences, express emotion, and connect with people beyond technical spaces. I often joke that engineering keeps my mind busy while poetry keeps my soul honest.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One thing that has worked well for me is not overcomplicating networking or mentorship, and just focusing on being a real person with people. A lot of strong connections start from simple conversations, shared interests, or small moments of consistency over time. People are usually more open than we expect, especially when the approach feels genuine rather than transactional.
Another thing I’ve learned is that mentorship doesn’t always have to be a defined role or title. Sometimes it shows up through different people at different times. It can be people who give advice or simply model something you want to learn. Being open to learning from a variety of people can be more helpful than waiting for one “perfect” mentor.
Overall, staying curious, being respectful of people’s time, and building relationships gradually tends to create the most meaningful connections.
