Conversations with Samuel Patrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Patrick.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I would say that music & connection are the through lines that tie my story together. From being a fan, to picking up drumsticks, to meeting incredible people who’s stories I wanted to share. I began my career documenting the hip-hop scene in Boston, where I hosted LFOD Radio & platformed artists through events & compilations of my own. I began to focus more on photography after moving to Los Angeles. I’ve always been verbose and it’s an exciting and challenging new way to express myself while continuing to center others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, and no. Yes, in the sense that I’ve been generally accepted & encouraged by people along the way and have had access to the tools, resources, and network to chase this amorphous dream. On the flip side, there’s been the usual disappointments and challenges that arise on any artistic or entrepreneurial endeavor.

Though I’ve often received positive feedback, I’ve typically worked in non-commercial spaces so the financial confirmation that I’m on the right path can be fleeting. That and the internal work necessary to live with non-traditional life choices are probably the biggest struggles for me. I’ve really had to build my self-esteem over the years. Most recently that’s involved addressing the people pleasing side of my nature.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multi-disciplinary producer specializing in clear and authentic storytelling. My main areas of practice are portrait & behind the scenes/candid photography. I’m known for my community oriented approach to creativity, promoting unity and growth in the service of art. Most recently this can be found in my work with Home Grown Radio & HIDDEN LACES.

I’m most proud of my consistency & follow-through. My word is my bond & I’ve shown that throughout my life. I’ve stayed true to my path, even if it’s twisted, turned, and led me to places I never expected. I’m thankful for all the conversations I’ve had & work I’ve done along the way. There’s been so many “wow, I’m glad we captured that” moments. Little gems that will be unearthed by future historians.

I’d say the above things set me apart from others. That and my genuine care and approach to collaboration. The most common feedback I get is that I listen and make people feel comfortable. I’m proud of that too!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My curiosity and willingness to learn.
