Meet Kayla Song of Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Song.

Hi kayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Massachusetts around 12 years old. My mother wanted her children to go to an performing arts school. I joined the show choir class and my wings grew from there. I started doing solos and then my school asked me to perform the national anthem for graduation. After that, people began reaching out asking if i could do the same for their schools. I got my first paid gig at 17 years old singing at a train station for the holidays. At 18 I also booked my first lead role in a film. I went to school for classical vocal performance before dropping out after my first semester. Crazy enough, about a year later a got a wonderful teaching job at an after-school program for the arts teaching children to sing. I am 21 years old and since graduating high school i have been in 3 films and I perform freelance all around my city. I love to garden, hike, and I also box.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One big challenge was moving across the country at 19 to live my now ex-husband who is military. We lived on a base in New Orleans and i missed my family dearly. The relationship unfortunately didnt last and i moved back with my parents to a teeny tiny room on the side of the house. I literally had NOTHING. i left everything and had to start completely over.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a vocalist/performer. I also am a vocal coach. I work at an afterschool program in downtown Springfield Massachusetts that provides free arts education to Springfield youth and families. On the side I perform around my city at weddings, parties, banquets, funerals… and more. I am passionate about life and I use my voice and charisma to bring people out of their comfort zone.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Your fear of rejection is holding you back from reaching your true and realist self. Stop focusing so much on how you are perceived and just LIVE. Experience the world with a childlike wonder, curiosity, and kindness.
