Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Seskin.
Hi Aaron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After spending a couple of years wandering through university trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, a friend who worked in a salon suggested I give hairdressing a try.
I never thought of it as a serious career, more something fun to do while I sorted things out. I had no idea I’d click with it right away.
I was a few months into hair school when it hit me: this is it, this is what I need to do.
Decades later, it’s proven to be the perfect fit – creative, constantly evolving and built around human connection.
A few years into my career I joined a Globally known hairdressing company called Toni&Guy. That’s when things really took off. I had the opportunity to travel nationally and abroad doing hair shows and education. I picked up a few awards here and there and was featured in some really cool educational projects.
The experience I gained from those years has defined my career in many ways.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I dove into hairdressing headfirst (no pun intended lol) Never wanting to be “mediocre”. I wanted to build something special for myself and I held myself to a fairly high standard. I still do.
That kind of drive comes with a cost. Long hours, sacrificed family time, the constant feeling that I wasn’t working hard or good enough. The external challenges are real as with any career. But honestly, the hardest battles have always been internal.
It’s a double-edged sword. That pressure can wear you down, but it’s also what keeps me sharp.
We’ve been impressed with Shift Salon, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2024 I took a leap of faith and opened Shift Salon, my own private studio in Dunwoody. It’s been awesome! Hair is such a personal thing for so many people. Having a space where I can slow down, actually listen, and connect with whoever is in my chair is huge. No distractions, no noise. Just the ability to identify what someone needs and figure out how to get them there.
My work tends to live in the space between low-maintenance and intentional, hair that looks effortless but is still quirky, fun and on-trend.
Over the years I’ve seen thousands of clients. I take on new clients all the time, but I’m also very fortunate to have so many loyal clients who have followed me through my career. I’m grateful for each and every one of them.
Everytime a guest enters my space I ask myself “ how can I be the best they have ever had?”. The best consultation, the best problem solver, the best listener, the best blowout…etc. Whether I actually am those things or not…I’m not always sure. But I never stop thinking about how to achieve it. Having that mindset fuels this multi-decade career journey I’ve been on.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Hair isn’t going anywhere. As long as people are growing it, there will be someone to cut it.
But I do think the industry is shifting. The stylists and salons who thrive most in the next decade won’t be generalists, they’ll be specialists. The ones who carve out a lane and own it. Scalp health, specialized color, texture work, a specific aesthetic etc. Clients are becoming more educated and more intentional about who they sit in the chair with, which raises the bar for everyone.
