Today we’d like to introduce you to Resya Barnez.
Hi Resya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Blend Within was founded in 2015 from a shared perspective that people, cultures, and ideas often have more in common than we realize. Through community initiatives, cross-cultural exchanges, and creative events, we explored how seemingly different worlds can connect through shared experiences, values, and creativity.
Over time, that curiosity grew into a broader mission. We brought together artists, entrepreneurs, educators, cultural organizations, and communities through projects that encouraged dialogue, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
In 2019, we invested everything into creating a physical space dedicated to these ideas. Shortly after opening in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us, like many others in the cultural sector, to rethink our direction. While challenging, that period encouraged us to expand our vision and develop new projects that could connect people across borders and disciplines.
Today, The Blend Within continues that journey through mixed heritage, film, music, art, education, and cultural exchange, guided by a simple idea: exploring what we have in common can create meaningful connections and new possibilities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges in our journey came in March 2020, when we opened a physical cultural space just as the COVID-19 pandemic began. Years of planning, renovation, and investment were suddenly met with lockdowns and uncertainty.
Like many independent organizations, we had to adapt quickly and find new ways to continue our work with limited resources. It was not an easy period, and in many ways we are still rebuilding from its impact today.
At the same time, the experience pushed us to rethink how culture, creativity, and community could connect across borders and beyond physical spaces. Many of the projects we are developing today grew directly from that period of reflection, experimentation, and resilience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Blend Within develops projects at the intersection of film, music, art, education, and intercultural exchange.
Our mission is to show similarities between things previously thought to be unrelated.
We are interested in the spaces where different worlds meet—between culture and community, music and heritage, art and education, architecture and public space, and local stories and global perspectives.
Return to RAW is a documentary exploring how Hip-Hop traveled from the streets of New York City across the Atlantic to Western Europe, including the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom, where cultural exchange helped shape new chapters of the movement. The project continues that journey through mixed heritage and cultural connections into Southeast Asia, revealing how local communities contributed to a global culture while maintaining their own identities.
Fuse explores hybrid life through mixed-heritage history and contemporary art, music, food, and storytelling. The project highlights the people, communities, and cultural exchanges that emerge where different worlds meet.
We collaborate with Eurasian artist Djaga, who was among the first Hip-Hop artists to perform with a full orchestra in 2005. Together we are developing Djaga – Ceremonial Cycles, a cinematic Hip-Hop project that combines music, storytelling, and heritage while exploring identity, ancestry, and transformation through a contemporary lens.
NXT LAB – Creative Youth Circle empowers young people through creativity, storytelling, language, and cultural exchange, helping them build confidence, skills, and meaningful connections with others.
While each project has its own focus, they all explore unexpected connections between cultures, histories, communities, and creative disciplines.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We think the next 5–10 years will be both exciting and challenging. Economic uncertainty, rapid technological change, and growing divisions within societies will continue to shape the creative and cultural sector.
In many ways, our world is more interconnected than ever before. People can communicate, collaborate, and share ideas across continents instantly. At the same time, we often see increasing polarization, social fragmentation, and fewer opportunities for meaningful dialogue between people who think differently.
We believe culture has an important role to play in that environment. Film, music, art, education, and storytelling can help people understand one another, challenge assumptions, and discover unexpected connections.
Technology will continue to transform how we create and communicate, but the human need for connection, belonging, and shared experiences will remain. For us, the future belongs to projects that help people find common ground in an increasingly complex world.
