Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Darries.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my journey in music at about 11-12 years old, learning how to DJ on the virtual DJ computer program and as soon as I figured out how to mix music,it felt limiting, I needed more control over the music, I needed to create music and that’s when I started learning to use the Fruity Loops DAW(Digital Audio Workspace), slowly figuring out rhythms and song structure, working my way up into writing songs and learning how to engineer, mix and master my own music.
Releasing beat tapes on SoundCloud and eventually full songs, which eventually led me to collaborating with artists in my area, Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg where I became a part of a movement and the engineer, graphics designer as well as a rapper and performer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey towards becoming an artist for me was filled with doubt and a lot of unknown variables, the rap/hip hop scene in RSA was still on the rise as it’s not the main/biggest music genre in south Africa, which is house music.
This made every release or mention of my music,a type of sale, where I needed to convince this person that rap was something worth listening to, especially it being local rap, which was always being compared to international acts.
It took me 5+ years before I got to perform my music for the first time, doing open mics and through those doors opening,my community started buying into the hype.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Producer,Mix engineer,Rapper and performer.
My focus is dark trap beats/R&B mixed with 90’s hip hop drums as well as afropop influences.
I’ve got a variation between upbeat melodies that is reminiscent of the 90’s kwaiti era in South Africa as well trap, bass heavy club bangers that is a joy the louder it plays.
In my own music, I focus on storytelling, motivational and love, it’s very evident even in the instrumentals alone that there’s a story.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I’m flexible in my ability to learn something and apply it, whether it be mixing or rapping with a different style or different beat style, I think my ability to find myself in new spaces, whether sonically or physically, it shines throughout who I am no matter where or with who I am.
