Daily Inspiration: Meet Dearick “D-Millz” Milton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dearick “D-Millz” Milton.

Hi Dearick “D-Millz”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I probably had no choice but to end up a musician given my father is a pianist and both my parents are singers. My dad was always over the ministry of music at church, growing up so I grew up around soul-feeding music since early on.

Eventually growing up in a split household, most of my music taste was inspired by my mom. Back in the day and even now, my mom is usually the one to let me know about the newest music that’s out! Growing up she always had the newest jams going and my siblings and I were always right there jamming too. Whether it be Queen (Erykah) Badu, D’Angelo, Jurassic 5, Hot Boyz, Ruff Riders, Goodie Mob etc. I have vivid memories of living in Boone, N.C. and my mom blasting “Get Rich to This.” We moved out there when I was in 2nd grade so I spent my younger years in the country.

I used to be extremely shy. No…like really bad. Would have meltdowns at the school talent shows and all. That’s one detail that people who know me today would probably find hard to believe, although pieces of that still exist.

Fast forward to 2008. I have a good friend Robin I met at Georgia State. (Shout-out to all my Panthers!) She heard me singing some kinda something I came up with and asked if that was something I made up. After confirming she very firmly made me agree to going to her friend Byron’s studio. He played some beats. Let one run, stepped outside for a cigarette. By the time he came back in I had a lil tune written. At that moment I fell in love with the process.

A few months later GSU was hosting a talent show competition where the crowd can decide if you move on or get eliminated. Just seconds into the song I hear boo’s coming from left and right. I’ll never forget that feeling. It almost made me quit making music right there but I remember being so mad, because I remember seeing people I considered friends even joining in, that I said to myself, “Alright, I’ll show them!” At that moment I became a music maniac. I was recording songs with a Guitar Hero mic and a pop filter I made from a cut up box and cut up t-shirt!

To this day I’ve recorded thousands of songs, (literally) and done shows overseas and all over the U.S. I’ve released many projects over the years with a new one entitled “I Forgot to Mention” arriving soon! You can find the first single “MUNI” by D-Millz on all streaming services.

Music has opened the door to a lot of opportunities for me, even leading me down a path of acting. Hopefully you’ll continue to see many more exciting things coming from me in the near future!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all! Between struggling to create a fanbase, working with limited resources, having kids etc, I, and many artist may agree, believe that the arts always come with some form of struggle. Some let those obstacles slow them down and some learn to translate that into their art. I’ve been on both sides more than once.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Although now, my most important/proud designation is “Dad,” I like to think that when people see me there’s a layer of mystery because they just don’t know what exactly it is I do. Simply put, I’m an artist. Although most know me as a musician, I also grew up a visual artist, even going to college for it. Since early childhood I’ve always drawn. Won art contests as a kid. I paint when I feel inspired to but I’ve also been a tattoo artist since 2008! I like to use my hands so I enjoy cooking in my spare time. I’m also a 15 year bartender. I enjoy that because I get to be very creative in that environment as well. I ultimately believe there’s many ways to express yourself. The key is actually expressing yourself and not who you think people want to see, whether that be in your style of dress or just your every day attitude!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Hope everybody reading this is having a surprisingly good day. Oh! And I hope you find $100 on the ground after reading this!
