Today we’d like to introduce you to Rasheeda Bint-Yahya.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up baking with my grandmother and brother, whom I learned my baking skills from. Baking with them are my fondest childhood memories. Both my grandmother and brother passed away from chronic illnesses, caused by environmental and dietary factors. After losing them and watching other family members suffer, I decided that I wanted to have a better quality of life and also wanted to promote health and wellness, through diet, so I decided to go vegan. My boyfriend Christopher has been vegan for 6 years and helped me transition and fall in love with the vegan lifestyle. I really enjoyed the new foods I was eating, but I really wanted to keep baking, because it was apart of my life. After a few test runs and a lot of positive feedback, I started Sweet Yogi. I wanted to bake and educate people, and that’s exactly what we do. We bake delicious desserts, but we also educate others that you can still enjoy all your favorite foods (and desserts) without compromising taste, flavor or your health. We want you to satisfy your sweet tooth without the guilt.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey in entrepreneurship has not been an easy one. Not only do I run my business, but I also work a full-time job. This includes lots of late nights and early mornings, frustrations, and times when I don’t know how I’m going to get through. I have invested, time, money, and extremely hard work into Sweet Yogi, but I am grateful to have a supportive tribe, that backs me in every move that I make. They keep me encouraged, and honestly, they are a major factor in the foundation that keeps Sweet Yogi strong and growing! I wouldn’t change any step in my journey.
My advice to younger women is to trust your inner goddess and let her lead you on your journey. She will never steer you wrong. Stay grounded in your spirituality, and never let anyone put their limitations off on you. Know yourself and the gift that the highest has chosen specifically for you. Let it shine in everything that you do, and others will be able to see and feel all the divine energy and vibes you put into it.
Please tell us about Sweet Yogi.
I am a vegan baker, and the owner of Sweet Yogi, online/pop up vegan bakery. We specialize in 100% vegan desserts, and are affordable, delicious, and conveniently delivered to your front door. Not only do we bake, but we also help individuals who are looking to go vegan, or transitioning into veganism.
We are known for our delicious chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake.
We are most proud of our new partnerships with Gallery 992 and First Batch ice cream.
What sets us apart from others, would be along with educating, we also make raw vegan desserts as well, our most popular ones being our snickers pie and raw carrot cake.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women have always been at the forefront of our society, but recently society has begun to recognize it. I believe that women are well positioned for any opportunity that you place in front of us, because we are strong resilient, and adapt well. The future is female.
