Rising Stars: Meet Christine Oswald of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Oswald.

Hi Christine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with acting at a very young age. I grew up watching my older cousins perform in theatre and got into it as soon as I could. I performed with local musical theatre companies throughout elementary school and high school, training in acting, singing, and dancing. However, in addition to my passion for acting, I knew that I wanted to travel and see as much of the world as possible. I decided to study International Relations at The Ohio State University, a degree which allowed me to study abroad in the UK, do an internship in South Africa, and teach English in China. I then moved to Brussels, Belgium to pursue a Master’s Degree in Political Strategy and Communication. After graduating, I took a job in Washington D.C. with a non-profit and realized how much I missed acting. The rest is history!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road. I’ve always struggled with my mental health and anxiety got the best of me several times when acting in my teenage years. I think this is one of the reasons I decided to pursue something else in college. With age and therapy, I learned coping mechanisms and now feel more at ease when acting.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am now a full time actor in film, television, and commercials. I started my career off with a lot of Indie horror (which I love!) and now I find myself working more in the romance genre. I think that every project teaches you something and I am always up for a challenge.

This past year, I worked on some really exciting projects including the Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries (UpTV), the Last Story of David Allen (release date TBD), and several microdramas with MyDrama, Reelshort, Dramapops, and Dramabox.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
If you want to be successful, you have to be willing to take risks. This has been true for me in both my academic history and acting career. 10 days after graduating from Ohio State, I moved to Brussels. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t speak much French, and I had signed for an apartment without seeing it in person. The first several weeks were really scary but I’m so glad I stayed. Without that risk, I wouldn’t have visited most of Europe, I wouldn’t have made friends from around the world, and I wouldn’t have grown into the independent woman I am today.

Pivoting back to acting after a 7 year break was also a risk. It had been a long time since I had any training and this time I was entering the film scene, which is very different from musical theatre. However, the risk was calculated and I took small steps towards achieving this new dream. I returned to acting classes, and I kept my full-time job for 5 years, working remotely from set when possible. When the time came to give up my 9-5 in order to completely immerse myself in acting, I knew I was ready.
