Today we’d like to introduce you to Tacinda Jones.

Hi Tacinda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you, VoyageATL, for inviting me to share a little piece of my journey.

I’m Taci, a Master Cosmetologist and Loctician. It’s funny how life works because my biggest insecurity growing up became the very thing that led me to my purpose.

I was the self-conscious little girl with the struggle ponytails, wondering why my hair just wouldn’t grow. There’s a running joke in the Black community: “If my mama hadn’t permed my hair…” Well…

Mine was chickenpox.

At six years old, I finally saw what my hair could do. One minute, I was dancing in front of the mirror, excited that my hair was almost as long as my little sister’s. The next, I was starting all over because I scratched it out.

Still, I’ve always loved hair. Even as a little girl, I was the one styling my baby dolls, doing my sister’s hair, and finding any excuse to practice. Hair fascinated me. But when it came to my own, I felt defeated. For a while, I believed those were simply the cards I had been dealt.

But it fueled my curiosity, and I spent years searching for answers, trying to understand my own hair. Looking back, I realized something: sometimes the very thing you struggle to love about yourself becomes the thing you’re called to understand. And if you’re lucky, it becomes the thing you’re called to help others with.

That search eventually led me to cosmetology school, where I earned my Master Cosmetology license. What started as me simply trying to understand my own hair turned into a passion for helping other women understand theirs.

Today, I specialize in healthy hair and loc care, but I’ve learned that what I do goes far beyond hair. I love creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and cared for. Hair is the service. Confidence is always the goal.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not At All!!

I started doing hair in 2020, and a month later, I found out I was pregnant. I was a home-based stylist at the time, trying to build a clientele while learning how to become a first-time mom.

But, it didn’t stop me.

The heaviest challenge was growing my business from home. I felt like no matter how good my work was, people often overlooked it because I didn’t have a salon. Social media can sometimes make home-based stylists seem less established, and I felt like I had to work twice as hard just to earn the same level of trust.

But, it didn’t stop me.

I invested in myself. In 2024, I paid my own way through cosmetology school while rebuilding my business, transitioning into a salon, paying booth rent, and raising my son.

My husband was also my rock during those times. I thank God for him. Challenging as it was, without him, I couldn’t see myself making it through the way I did.

Funny enough, school brought out a different breed in me. I was locked in. I became one of the top students in my class, won competitions, and earned my Master Cosmetology license.

Looking back, I don’t think those seasons were meant to stop me. They taught me that sometimes the biggest investment you can make isn’t in your business, it’s in yourself.

As you know, we’re big fans of Taci Got Styles. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I love that Locs don’t have to fit inside of a box.

At Taci Got Styles, I specialize in healthy hair and loc care, but creativity has always been a part of who I am. I love creating styles that remind people locs can be just as versatile as any other hairstyle. From everyday looks to fantasy-inspired creations, I enjoy pushing the limits of what’s possible while still honoring the integrity of the hair.

Healthy hair will always come first.

What I’m most proud of is that my clients never have to choose between creativity and care. They can trust that every style is created with the long-term health of their hair in mind.

More than anything, I want my clients to leave feeling educated, confident, and excited about their hair. My chair is a place where healthy hair, creativity, and genuine care all meet.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a little bit of everything. I’m a social butterfly in high moments, but I enjoy being to myself. I don’t have one box to fit into, so, I don’t bother with labels.

I experienced bullying growing up, and for a while, I thought I needed to change who I was. But, I love ALLLL of my Black Girl Magic. AND I’m who I am because I’m that Girl!

Social media has also given me a space to express myself. Whether you meet me through a screen or in my chair, what you see is genuine. And I love to give people their flowers as well.

I’m incredibly thankful for my clients because they’ve allowed me to build a career where I don’t have to pretend to be anyone else.

Above all, I thank my Lord and Savior. For years, I thought I was searching for the right career. Looking back, I was really searching for the canvas He created me for. Once I found it, I finally had somewhere to use my paintbrush.
