Conversations with the Inspiring Claire Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Black.

Claire, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started beauty school back in 2010, was about 90% done when my daughter was born in 2012, so I put it all on hold for a few years, then my son was born late 2013, but I went back, graduated and got my license and finally started doing what I love!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been anything but a smooth road, for sure. I’ve suffered from severe anxiety for all of my adult life, after several years of sexual abuse throughout my childhood, so that has definitely had its challenges. I’ve had to learn to remind myself daily, that the evil, negative things that happen to us, do not have to define us. So, I make it a point to be positive and to look for the best in situations and in people.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Level Spa Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a hairstylist. I would say I specialize in highlighting and balayage, but I really enjoy doing a variety of services!

I love the interaction and relationship that you get to build with each client. Every client that sits in my chair becomes family. We share more than just that time together. I love getting the opportunity to touch people’s hearts, not just their hair.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think one of the hardest things women face is that in a lot of cases, we have to work twice as hard to prove ourselves. We have to work so much harder to earn the respect that is often just given automatically to any man you might meet in a professional setting.
