Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Egan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Colin. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My love for illustration started when I was young. Reading books just didn’t do it for me growing up, I would often glaze over and get distracted (unless they were picture books). Although, with cartoon shows, I would get sucked in for hours. This love for cartoons sparked my desire to start illustrating.
So over the years, I would draw in class, at home, or anytime I was bored – it was a way for me to get lost in something. It wasn’t until high school that I started to realize this was something I was good at and people enjoyed to look at.
By this time I had roughly developed my style and was comfortable with a pen and paper. Once I got to college, this is when Blue Cat started to emerge as a character, and The Catoonist profile was created.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started The Catoonist is certainly felt like a smooth road, everything was new, I wasn’t worried about followers, and I was doing this for just me and to make others smile. It wasn’t until recently that challenges started to get in the way.
I was getting in my head a lot about what the fans wanted from me and when I felt like I didn’t deliver that it would make me stressed out and not want to create. Some have noticed, but right now I am taking a break from social media so I can get back to the roots of why I started to illustrate in the first place, as well as trying to take the next step with my cartoons – but that’s something you’ll have to wait for in the future. 🙂
The Catoonist – what else should we know?
The Catoonist is known for the illustration style and characters I’ve created.
What I am most proud of is creating a character that is easily recognizable, it’s something I’ve always tried to accomplish.
What I think sets me apart from other cartoon illustrators on social media is that I’m trying to create characters that you grow to love – you might even have your favorite. And with that, I want to create a whole world that these characters live in.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is when you feel you’ve accomplished a goal/goals. So far everything that I’ve done with The Catoonist has felt like a success, I’m doing what I love to do.
Although one of my biggest goals is to create my own animated cartoons series, this has been the goal ever since I was young.
