Today we’d like to introduce you to Sacoya Jackson.
Sacoya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At a very young age, I was introduced to the modeling world through my mother. My mother was represented by agencies like John Casablanca and Wilhelmina in the Atlanta area. Sometimes, I would be able to travel along with her and get to see things behind the scenes. I would be so elated when her shows and shoots was local because I loved the modeling and fashion atmosphere. When she brought clothes and shoes home, I would spend hours in her closet trying to model like her. After she did a hair show for Bronner Bros, I said this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I loved everything about modeling. I loved seeing beautiful black women. Seeing the shows and shoots gave a little six-year-old child chills. At that age, I knew I a could be supermodel and I would be a supermodel.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Modeling has not been a smooth road whatsoever. First and foremost, colorism is real. Those that believe that one shade of skin color is much more beautiful than the other shade of skin color makes things twice as hard. As well as so-called “modeling requirements or what is beautiful”. You cannot be too short. Your body cannot be too urban. Your nose is too big. You need to be certain weight. It is so degrading. We were not all made to be models, but we are all beautiful.
