We are thrilled to be connecting with Aaron Thomas again. Aaron is a Family Law Attorney and is also a content partner. Content partners help Voyage in so many ways from spreading the word about the work that we do, sponsoring our mission and collaborating with us on content like this. Check out our conversation with Aaron below.
Hi Aaron, so great to have you join us again. For folks who might have missed our earlier conversations, can you please take a minute to briefly introduce yourself?
I am the owner of Aaron Thomas Law, a law firm that specializes in all things family law, including divorce, custody, child support, and prenuptial agreements.
What do you think sets your firm apart from other family law firms?
We’ve made a point of hiring for personality fit first. I’m lucky to be working with brilliant people, but when clients leave us reviews, it’s the empathy our team has for them that they talk about. Let’s face it – a lawsuit over your divorce or custody dispute is not going to be fun – you want compassionate human beings to help walk you through that process. We believe in educating our clients so that they can make informed decisions about the direction of their case, rather than dictating the way we want the case to proceed.
How has your firm adjusted to work post-COVID?
Our practice has always offered flexibility for our team to work remotely, so we were lucky to already have the infrastructure for everyone to work from home – we hit the ground running. And by moving client meetings to video conference, we eliminated the drive to our office and parking hassle, so seeing your attorney face to face has gotten easier and more convenient. Rather than a client having to take half a day off of work to make sure they have time to get to their lawyer’s office and back, clients can meet with us on their lunch break.
What advice do you have for someone that is about to file for divorce?
Gather information and gather friends. Meet with a lawyer as soon as possible. You can’t gather information about what the divorce process will look like too early, but you can definitely wait too late. Logistically and legally, decisions are going to be made about your finances and if you have children, about the time you will spend with them. It’s a great help to gather all of your financial information: value of all your assets and debts, including bank accounts, real estate, retirement, vehicles, etc. And take the time to learn about the different types of parenting plans and what would work best for you.
But it’s also important to prepare emotionally, get your support network in place. The average contested divorce in Georgia lasts a year. You will want the support of your friends, your family, your mental health professional, throughout this process. It may not qualify technically as legal advice, but that’s some of the best advice I can give – lean on those around you.
While you’re known as a divorce law firm, you’ve created a specialty in Prenuptial Agreements at GeorgiaPrenups.com. Why did you start that and what do you hope to accomplish with this new project?
I think I’m qualified to say that getting married is the biggest financial decision of a person’s life. Most couples join their financial lives without a clear plan, leading to misunderstandings at best and the demise of the relationship at worst – I’ve seen far too many marriages broken apart by money issues. What we’ve done is reverse engineered agreements to avoid the biggest money arguments that I’ve seen divorcing couples have over the hundreds of divorces I’ve done. I believe that getting on the same page about what your financial life will look like and being transparent about money from day one of a marriage makes for a happier relationship.
