We recently had the chance to connect with Amie Waltzer and Brittany Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amie Waltzer and, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Waking up and getting my kids ready for school! Grabbing a coffee on my way out the door, doing school drop offs, and then sitting on the porch with a new coffee getting ready for the rest of the day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The Book Bird is a community space for lovers of books and connection. We believe in the power of stories to expand our worlds, hence our tagline: “Read and Take Flight.” Our day to day operations as well as our book club, author and thematic events are all focused on bringing joy and connection to our community. As a brand run by two moms, The Book Bird works to bring the magic of your favorite storytime to everyday life.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Amie: As a child, I dreamt of being a writer. I sent in my stories to all the major publishers before I even turned 10. However, once I reached college and beyond, the need to focus on skills that would help me make a living overshadowed that dream. Though I still write, when I graduated with my English degree I went into the Marketing and Advertising world.
Brittany: I also dreamt of being a writer. Another focus of mine was going to the Olympics. I was an elite athlete until college when I shifted my focus to Sociology and Health Sciences.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Amie: It’s okay to be anxious! Do it scared. It all works out exactly as it is supposed to.
Brittany: Keep pushing your boundaries. You’re on a path to something that will make you happy.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Brittany and Amie: We lean on each other to bounce ideas around. Having a partner is the best thing in the world because it doubles how many cool things you can dream up for your business!
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Among the bookshelves, talking with customers and friends about stories. Being surrounded by what we love and engaging with it everyday.
