An Inspired Chat with Francisco Da Silva ‘Mestre Fran’ of Decatur

Francisco Da Silva ‘Mestre Fran’ shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Francisco , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: When was the last time you felt true joy?
For me, it was two months ago when Instituto Mestre Fran, our nonprofit Capoeira center in Londrina, Brazil, reopened its doors after being closed during the pandemic. Seeing the space come alive again with youth, adults, and seniors training, and connecting through Capoeira completely free of charge was a powerful reminder of why we do this work. That moment was pure joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mestre Fran, and I’ve devoted my life to Capoeira a powerful Afro-Brazilian art form that fuses movement, music, and culture. I’m the founder of World Maculelê Arts, a nonprofit organization with roots in both Atlanta and Londrina, Brazil, offering free Capoeira programs for youth, adults, and seniors.

What makes our work unique is that it goes far beyond martial arts. We use Capoeira as a tool for empowerment, cultural identity, and community transformation especially in underserved areas.

We’re not just teaching kicks – we’re opening doors, building confidence, and preserving a vibrant cultural legacy for generations to come.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my wife, Mestra Sara, who leads impactful community initiatives. Her dedication inspires me daily!

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I’m honored to have so many students who truly listen and apply what they learn in their personal lives. Seeing them grow and transform through Capoeira is a constant reminder of the power of listening not just hearing words, but embracing lessons and putting them into action.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what really matters to me is community. They know I’m deeply committed to building spaces where people feel empowered and supported whether through Capoeira or in everyday life. For me, it’s about lifting others up and creating lasting positive change together.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m immersed in the rhythm of Capoeira moving with the music, surrounded by my family, students and the energy of the roda. It’s in those moments of flow and connection that everything else fades away, and I’m fully present and grounded.
