We recently had the chance to connect with Sherri Lester and have shared our conversation below.
Sherri, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am most proud of the “FEELING” people have when they are customers of our mobile coffee bar. It’s not something you can see but when the people express to you that they have enjoyed their coffee experience, I feel like awesome, that’s what I was going for!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Sherri Lester and I started Carter & Cash Coffee & Saloon in 2021. We have our own brands of coffee that you can order online and then it is roasted fresh and shipped to your home. Another aspect of our business is doing mostly private events from our Mobile Coffee Trailer where the staff or employees of a business/school, etc. are served beverages from our own blends for a short time frame. The customers feel appreciated by their employer and we are truly blessed to play a part in that service.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I believe my parents instilled a vision in me that I truly could do or be whatever I wanted to be. I had a wonderful childhood. My parents were not self-employed but they did always give back to their communities and churches with their servitude. I always saw that as such a positive.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There are many times in my life I almost gave up. One thing that comes to mind years ago was while running a marathon in the pouring rain on a cold day, I thought, everyone will say running 18 miles in these conditions is quite an accomplishment and then I thought about my 3 boys watching and thought, “NO”, I will finish this, just like I told them I would, regardless of the conditions. It’s about finishing . . .period.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Personal relationships. People in power believe that you just come to work and do your job, that they don’t need to know anything personal about you. What they forget is, my personal life is MY LIFE. I just do this job to pay bills. When who you work with doesn’t take any care in your life outside of work, then they have missed the entire boat.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That this gal knew how to persevere and get to the other side of the hard things so she could enjoy the good things.
