We’re looking forward to introducing you to Therron Dumas. Check out our conversation below.
Therron , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Myself! I had lost myself for years.. maybe even over a decade. I almost gave up on life, I literally say I had one foot in the grave. Life was stressful to the point where I didn’t care about my health, how I looked at one point or anything else. And like I said, literally one foot in the grave. My self-confidence was gone, my blood pressure was over 200, and I just hadn’t been myself in forever. Several factors changed that. One was the phone call I had with a childhood friend of mine and he told me how proud “the hood” was of me, but everyone was too much of a “thug” to let me know, and to admit it when we were younger. He then went into how is it that you did everything we have done in the streets…. everything, yet you were able to keep it together, go to the military, come home, fell back just a bit for a while, pushed through yet again….and now we’re all watching you on TV and in the movies. Then there was my cousin Kenny, he gave me more of an abrupt wake up call.. basically it was like “Cuz, what the hell are you doing!” How the hell could you have forgotten who you were/are? The whole younger generation of our family looked up to you, and everything you’ve accomplished, and the elders of our family were so proud of you. You were the measure of what they wanted us to be like. How did you let yourself get to this point, and better yet when are you getting back to yourself? All of that built confidence in me again. The final reason…last but not least, the new lady in my life.. she met me at my lowest, and I almost lost her by dragging my feet and not applying myself as needed to show her that I had a real interest in being in a relationship. It was always open arms when I was sleeping in the car with my dog, for months! It was even open arms to my children at one point when they weren’t in the best position either. She has stuck by me through my worst of times, and is still here now that I am healthier, happier, and I would say almost 100% back to the old me. She always tells me that no matter what, she’s my number one fan. I can’t thank her enough. Of course there were other people along this “back to me” journey who supported me, always kind words, always supported, and always a part of the team, and I them all as well. All I can say is your boy is finally back, and I thank God for that!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The lady in my life right now. She definitely changed how I used to see myself in the mirror. I psychologically slip back from time to time because of how long I was dealing with traumatic situations.. but I quickly bounce back, now at this point. Unfortunately as in life, there are still people who test me.. but I’m beyond that now. I wish certain aspects of family were closer, but I believe I have extended myself almost to the max at this point in my life.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that as successful as you think you may be, it can all go away very quickly! At one point, there wasn’t too much of anything I couldn’t do.. well at least at a certain level. That was a very powerful thing, to be able to walk in any particular establishment and get what you want when you want it, clothes, jewelry, vehicles, almost at your fingertips.. then bam, cars gone, house gone, sleeping in extended stay motels, no vehicle at all, everyone who you helped turned a blind eye or always had an excuse. Now building it back up the correct way, I don’t foresee ever experiencing that again. Quick money is just that.. comes quick and leaves quicker.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
No and yes, the new public version of me is a more outgoing, more courageous, and outspoken version of who I used to be. The private version of me, is more comical now, I’m still pretty much reserved, people probably wouldn’t agree.. but I’m very shy and don’t like to be the center of attention, and don’t like a lot of people looking at me.. yet I’m in over 60 movies right? It’s crazy.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think certain people or certain groups of people would misunderstand that I had to put myself first after putting everyone else first for so many years, so it may seem like I was turning my back, or cutting them off, but essentially what I was doing…. was saving my own life.
