Zamar Martinez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Zamar, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think people often assume that being a jeweler is just about selling jewelry, but really it’s about helping people celebrate their most meaningful moments. We care as much about the story behind the piece as the piece itself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Zamar Martinez, founder and CEO of Z Jewelers. I started this brand out of necessity and a dream. When the pandemic hit in 2020 I lost my job and I had to rethink everything. With no background in jewelry but a belief that I was meant to build something of my own, I took my last paycheck and bought my very first piece of jewelry for resale for $51.80. That simple act was the beginning of everything, and on May 1st, 2020, I officially launched Z Jewelers.
Over the years, Z Jewelers has attracted a number of celebrity clients, athletes & influencers and has also been featured in publications highlighting our unique approach to design and quality. We’ve also received recognition for innovation in the jewelry space, which has been humbling and inspiring.
Beyond the business, I’m committed to pouring back into others by giving back through Women Strong International and the Z Jewelers Foundation while simultaneously growing the Z Jewelers Academy to help aspiring entrepreneurs launch their own brands.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I had three teachers who saw my potential long before I saw it in myself. They used to tell me that I’d grow up to be a model, an actress, or someone of importance. Funny enough, all of those things happened at different points in my life, but what really mattered was that their belief in me gave me the courage to believe in myself. It’s been a long journey of self-discovery, but now I feel truly passionate about what I do and the impact I can make on the world through jewelry.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a fear of letting others down. That same fear followed me into business, especially as I learned that success comes with ups and downs. Every time I had a slower month, I’d panic, worried that I was letting my audience down or that they might lose interest. Over time, I learned the ins and outs of business, understanding financial seasons, market trends, and the natural peaks and valleys. I also did a lot of inner work as a leader and entrepreneur, which taught me to see challenges as data and opportunities to grow rather than reasons to fear.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
If you asked my closest friends, they would say that what really matters to me is God and family. Everything I do, every decision I make, comes back to those two things. They are at the center of my life and my purpose.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I positively impacted their lives in some way. Whether it was creating a special piece of jewelry for an important occasion, mentoring someone to help them grow, supporting others through philanthropy, or simply inspiring them through my story of resilience and overcoming obstacles, I want to leave a mark that makes a difference.
