We’re looking forward to introducing you to Zaniyah Pichardo. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Zaniyah, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Art makes me lose track of time and find myself every time. In my opinion art is limitless it comes in so many forms. Anything you can sit back admire and be proud of is art.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Zaniyah Pichardo I am a creative from Hampton, Virginia and I now reside in Atlanta, Georgia. My journey through life thus far has been a reminder of how far I’ve come and grown. My last interview with Voyage was catered to my Real Lyfe Essentials brand and although its still a passion of mine, about 2 years ago I decided to take a break and take on a new creative outlet. This outlet gave me a spark that reignited my purpose in life. Deejaying is still a way for me to share my energy with the world similar to my other passions but through the frequencies of music. I am a self taught open format DJ and I plan to take my personal sound global. I am grateful for my community for having faith in me without them I wouldn’t be as far as I’ve come. Every day I learn something new. Every aspect of deejaying is rooted in authenticity which is what I appreciate most about it. Its a genuine art; a form of expression that tells a story through sound and moves the people. Growing up I was the only child and music has always healed me in a sense we have a deep connection its a part of who I am.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was faced with a lot of real life scenarios at a young age. I feel as if those moments caused me to grow up fast so I’ve always been mature. Before the world told me who I had to be I was a happy, free spirited outgoing little girl. Times were just simpler back then. Every day I try my best to honor and cater to that free spirited little girl. I wouldn’t change my upbringing for the world because I know that it built my character to be the strong young woman I am today. I was raised by an independent single mother and I’m thankful for the life she built for us because we didn’t come from much but we had all we needed.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could advise my younger self of anything I’d let her know how powerful and important she is. It took me a while to step into my confidence and power. Some days I still don’t feel as resilient as others but everyday I’m grateful I get to wake up and choose to live in my light. Knowing your worth is so important even as a little girl. I struggled with understanding my potential and that would cause me to dim my light. Comparison truly is the thief of joy but self love can restore that joy. Once you shift your perspective inward and focus on your own journey you’re choosing YOU.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
I believe it’s important to be open to new information, people, foods, places, etc. Moving through life with an open heart and mind can be challenging at times but, it’ll always be worth it because it’s the best way to embrace whatever life brings your way. Growth starts with openness which may be the key to discovering purpose, genuine understanding, and fulfillment. Growing up mental health wasn’t prioritized for me but, Im guided by the belief that it impacts your overall well-being. Once you alter your mindset you can live a more balanced enjoyable life.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I have hoped, prayed, and manifested certain accomplishments in my life that I am thankful for receiving. I wouldn’t say I wasn’t satisfied in any form by these experiences, id rather say I’m still not content afterward. Im grateful yet yearning for more success everyday. Im just very accepting with the fact of the type of lifestyle I desire may not be easily attainable, yet I’m confident I’ll achieve it.
