We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bria Knight. Check out our conversation below.
Bria, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The business of being a makeup artist is often misunderstood as simply playing in makeup, but it involves much more. There is a deep psychology behind servicing individuals, often strangers, and providing an experience that leaves clients feeling satisfied and eager to return. A makeup artist must quickly read and understand their client, sometimes within seconds, and translate their vision into a tangible, beautiful result. This process is an art of manifesting and visualizing, tailoring each look to meet the client’s unique needs. Beyond the technical skill, makeup artistry is also a form of therapy for many; it addresses insecurities and offers a safe space for clients to relax and express themselves. Creating a calming atmosphere, knowing when to speak or listen, and sensing unspoken discomfort are crucial skills. Ultimately, makeup artistry is about more than aesthetics — it’s about connection, confidence, and understanding individual stories.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I’m Bria, a distinguished beauty business operator with a passion for delivering luxury beauty services on a national and international scale. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to excellence, I have built a reputation for transforming clients’ visions into stunning realities, whether for weddings, special events, video productions, or exclusive photo shoots. Beyond my professional pursuits, I am avid explorer who enjoys discovering new destinations, cuisines, and cultures. This love of exploration has enriched my ability to adapt and connect with clients from diverse backgrounds.
My journey began with a simple act of love—preparing my grandmother’s hair and makeup for church every Sunday. She was more than just a beloved matriarch; she was a beacon of beauty, talent, strength, expression, elegance, and class. Her influence shaped the person I am today, instilling in me an unbreakable connection with God and inspiring my artistry as a form of ministry.
The passing of my grandmother left a profound void in my life—a pain I transformed into purpose. I decided to channel my grief into creating a business that offers both aesthetic and spiritual transformations. My artistry is my ministry, a way to heal, uplift, and serve others while honoring her legacy. She was my muse, my inspiration, and the reason behind III. VI. Artistry. Through this journey, I aim to empower others to find their own beauty, strength, and spiritual connection, just as she did for me.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who to be, I was a boundless artist, a creator unshackled by societal norms. I was led by my emotions, playing freely with the idea that I could become whoever I wanted to be—changing, evolving daily because life itself inspired me. I saw no limits, no boxes, only endless possibilities.
As I grew older, however, I realized that society tends to categorize and confine us—by our qualities, socioeconomic status, religion, friend groups, even down to what we eat. These labels and boxes can create divisions, and with awareness of the bipolar nature of today’s world, I’ve chosen a different path.
Now, I live a life operating on zero systems, a life dedicated to serving everyone—regardless of sexual orientation, upbringing, or career path. My purpose is to build unity through my artistry, not to polarize. I reject the myth of the American Dream, which often feels elusive or non-existent. Instead, I advocate for acceptance—of who we are, where we come from, and how we can grow stronger through beauty and understanding. My art aims to bridge divides and celebrate the diversity that makes us human.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I have faced a significant wound of doubt and skepticism from others, particularly when someone told me that I could never make a living as a makeup artist. That kind of negativity was deeply impactful, shaking my confidence and challenging my dreams. However, I transformed that wound into a powerful source of motivation. Instead of allowing that doubt to define me, I’ve used it as fuel to prove not only to others but more importantly to myself that my passion can be lucrative and fulfilling.
Healing this wound involved reclaiming my self-belief and staying true to my vision. I prioritized authenticity and personal fulfillment over conforming to conventional career expectations. Through perseverance and dedication, I’ve created a life and career that aligns with my core values—doing what I love and feeling rewarded simply by existing in the world I’ve built for myself. My story is a testament to resilience, self-trust, and the importance of pursuing what truly matters to me.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public me is indeed the real me, rooted in unwavering authenticity and steadfast morals. I’ve always stayed true to my principles, which is something that sometimes irritates onlookers, especially when they expect me to conform or be different behind the scenes. People often question if I am always calm, introspective, and crafty, and the answer is a resounding YES. My calm demeanor and introspective nature are genuine facets of who I am.
I prefer solitude over crowds, finding comfort in intimate settings where true connection and creativity flourish. Artistry remains at the core of my daily life—whether it’s fashion, beauty, or personal expression—these passions define me and what I stand for. I take pride in my business and embody its essence every day, showcasing my dedication and unique style.
I steer clear of gossip and unnecessary drama, understanding that maintaining integrity and focus is key to my success. This disciplined approach allows me to balance both professional and personal life effortlessly. Throughout it all, I remain consistent—authentic in every aspect of my being—affirming that who I am publicly is exactly who I am inside.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes, I have experienced something that closely resembled a bait and switch. I created my business because I wanted to pursue my passion and express my artistry, but I found that it did not bring the immediate satisfaction I expected. Instead, I constantly find myself adjusting, highlighting what works and what doesn’t, making minor changes to adapt to the ever-changing industry landscape. It’s a continuous journey to carve out my own lane and ensure that my experience is truly unique and authentic.
The idea of entrepreneurship is often misunderstood. Many people think being a boss means working when they want, but in reality, it often involves longer hours and more responsibilities. To succeed, you need multiple streams of income and systems in place that keep your business running smoothly—ideally on autopilot—so you aren’t overwhelmed. As you grow and build a team, the workload can increase because you now have others relying on you. Maintaining clear policies and boundaries becomes crucial to stay afloat and ensure sustainable growth. All in all, I am never satisfied because as goals are reached, I find myself wanting more.
