Brittany Sessions shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Brittany, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’m being called to keep going, even when things are quiet, even when I’m not getting the likes, the sales, or the outside validation. I used to believe that if I wasn’t posting all the time or constantly creating, then I wasn’t doing enough, or worse, that I was failing. But now I realize that my purpose doesn’t disappear just because I paused.
I’m being called to speak from the middle of the journey, not just after the wins. To show up even when it feels imperfect or uncertain. To share the real, raw truth behind building something with soul. Even when I drift, my passion for celebrating Black history always brings me back. Black History Rocks was born from that passion, and it continues to remind me that the mission still matters.
I’m being called to trust that the vision is still valid. That I’m still the one to lead it. And most of all, I’m being called to stop waiting for permission, and just start again, exactly where I am.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brittany, and I’m the founder of Black History Rocks, a purpose-driven brand dedicated to celebrating and elevating Black history and culture in meaningful and accessible ways. At its core, Black History Rocks is about helping anyone with a genuine interest in learning more about Black history, whether they’re just beginning or continuing a lifelong journey of understanding.
One of my first offerings is a Black History activity booklet, created to help people of all ages and backgrounds connect with Black history in an engaging and personal way. What makes this brand special is the heart behind it. It was never about chasing trends; it was born from a deep love for culture, identity, and truth. Even in seasons when I’ve stepped back, the mission has always pulled me forward again.
I’m currently in a season of rebuilding and reimagining, but the passion is stronger than ever. Black History Rocks remains a space for learning, honoring, and celebrating the richness of our past and present.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was deeply curious. I had a natural hunger to learn, to explore, to ask questions, and that curiosity led me on a journey of discovery. As I started learning more about Black history, something in me clicked. It connected me to my culture in a way I never knew was possible. It felt personal, purposeful, like finding a piece of myself. But along the way, I began to question whether I had what it took to share that connection with others. I became cautious. Life, expectations, and self-doubt started to whisper things like “stay small” or “wait until you’re ready.” And for a while, I listened. Still, that curiosity never left me. It’s what brought me back, again and again, to the work, the mission, and the belief that this journey matters. Black History Rocks is a reflection of that journey. It’s how I continue to discover, connect, and share, not just history, but identity and pride.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. There have definitely been moments when I questioned whether I should continue with Black History Rocks. Times when I felt stuck, when I hadn’t posted in a while, or when I looked at my progress and wondered, “Is anyone still paying attention? Is this still relevant?” The silence made me doubt myself. I started to feel like maybe I had missed my moment, or that I didn’t have what it takes to carry the vision through. The lack of movement made me wonder if I had failed.
But then something always found a way to remind me. I’d have a conversation with someone who would say, “You should be teaching this.” Or I’d come across a new discovery in Black history, or rediscover something I had already learned, and feel that same passion stir in me again. Sometimes it felt like God was gently tapping me on the shoulder, saying, “You can’t let this go. You’re meant to keep going.”
I’ve learned that pausing doesn’t mean quitting. And slow seasons don’t cancel your purpose. Black History Rocks still matters, even when I’m behind the scenes trying to figure it all out. And so do I. Every time I’ve almost given up, I’ve come back stronger. Not because everything suddenly got easier, but because I was reminded of why I started, and Who gave me the vision in the first place.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is truth in storytelling, especially when it comes to Black history. Too often, our stories are distorted, minimized, or erased altogether. And especially during these times, when the powers that be are actively attempting to water down or erase our history, I believe it’s more important than ever to protect and preserve the truth. Telling the full story, the trauma, the brilliance, the innovation, the joy, and the strength that have always been part of who we are.
For me, truth-telling is a form of healing. It restores pride, corrects the narrative, and helps us remember who we are. That’s what Black History Rocks is about, helping people reconnect with history in a way that feels personal, powerful, and honest. Whether I’m creating a resource, sharing a fact, or simply holding space for a conversation, I treat our stories with care and intention because the truth of our culture is too important to lose, and too sacred to dilute.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light I’ve been dimming is my voice, the part of me that knows I was meant to teach, share, and speak truth about Black history and culture. I’ve waited… waited for the perfect moment, the perfect product, the perfect version of myself to feel “ready.” And in the waiting, I held back. I questioned whether I was doing enough, whether I was qualified, or whether I had what it takes to lead something meaningful. That doubt made me stay quiet, even when the passion was still burning inside me.
But the truth is, this light was never meant to be hidden. Every time I tried to walk away or stay silent, something, or someone, reminded me: This is your work. This is your lane. I’ve learned that my voice doesn’t have to be the loudest to be impactful. It just has to be honest, rooted, and willing to show up. Through Black History Rocks, I’m letting that light shine again, not just for others to see, but so I can finally see it in myself, too.
