Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Loss of job – When I reflect on the past, now I can see the shift in my life. God was making room for changes. At first, I was worried about how I was going to survive, raising two boys and providing the necessities of life for my family. God provides for me daily.

Abusive relationships – imagine being five months pregnant with your child and making a decision to walk away. To this day, I don’t regret the choices I’ve made to end this narcissistic relationship.

Bad credit – I messed up big time in college. Apply for all those cards. I’ve worked hard to repair the damages, once I’ve learned how important it is to have a good credit rating.

Food stamp benefits – Without a job for a while, I had to rely on government assistance to fill the gap until I got back on my feet. It wasn’t easy, looking back now, the stigma that individuals who rely on these programs are failures.

These individuals are not failures, we are individuals trying to survive, trying to take care of families in rough times. Some assistance is warranted. The times we’re living in now, sometimes, I wish I could get assistance even though I’m in a better financial position.

Single mom raising two boys – my thought process was is this a cycle for me, a young mom, with no other parental responsibility for my boys? Teaching boys to be a man, working two jobs to survive and save for your family’s future. Statistics show that we currently have 9.8 million single-parent households. Wow.

The trials and tribulations were challenging and painful at times, but I persevered, hence my book title. I gotta break this chain over my life. In doing so, I prayed daily for a spouse and helped meet. God answered my prayers two years later.

Today, I’ve been married to a loving, dedicated, hardworking, genuine man for seventeen years. My life hasn’t been easy, but I made it through with God’s grace and favor. She was once broken and shattered to his finding life and fulfillment. She is me, Cordea Reid.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Cordea aids individuals in writing their stories of trauma, abuse, and homelessness and sharing thoughts through poems. She gives freely, her love, her time. Why??? She knows what it’s like not to feel loved. Not having that friend to comfort you in times of trials. She prays for all she comes in contact with. She’s a genuine and authentic person.

What do you think about happiness?
My happy place is home. My spouse and our four children and four grandchildren are my happiness. I used to read a lot of books when I was younger. That was a form of therapy for me. I love retail therapy, especially on my down days.

Decorating and redecorating our home. I get bored easily, therefore I can and will transform our home in the blink of an eye all seasons. More importantly knowing that my families are covered, loved, and secured in the arms of God.
