Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin James-Evelyn.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My creative journey started back in 2021 when I decided to start my own podcast called “Justo’s Talks”. From there, I went on to interview creatives around the Underground Atlanta. The show only lasted for 40 episodes, 30 audio episodes and 10 episodes on Youtube and the reason for that was because originally, the podcast was only supposed to be an audio only podcast but we’ve decided to change that to gain a bigger audience. While I was podcasting, I was also juggling photography, videography, streaming, and music production as side gigs. During this time, I had another podcast with my best friend, Joel, called “Ignorant Convos” which was sort of my entry into comedy. That show only ran for about 10 episodes but it was the most fun I had in developing something so I decided to take a leap and focus on using that energy towards my streaming content leading me to where I am today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would be lying if I said it was. Nothing is ever easy. I was naive going into streaming because I thought once you continuously put my face out there, you’ll gain instantly. I was wrong. It takes some time to start growing your audience. Especially if you’re in a specific niche, One of my biggest struggles is inconsistency. Even the people who watch me will tell you the same thing. The inconsistency stems from me being dissatisfied with certain numbers. That’s something I’m still working on. If I had any advice for someone going through the same as me, focus on the positives. Treat every video, clip, etc. as an seed and overtime it will grow into something bigger and if it doesn’t meet it’s expectations, take notes on what didn’t work and move on to the next thing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d like to say that I’m a creative because I have to many titles but my core is photography, music production, and content creation.
I’m mostly known for my stream clips but I have different audiences for each title under my name.
I’m mostly proud in the community I’ve built. Yes it is small, but I’m forever grateful because these are people I don’t even know from a can of paint yet they still show up for whatever I’m pushing. They’re like my second family. If I needed advice, I’ll ask chat and vice versa.
What’s sets me apart from others is my determination. If someone else would step in my shoes, they’ll probably quit by the 2nd month. I didn’t make it this far to just hang up the jersey. I still have the hunger of a rookie.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love Jazz music deeply. Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, etc. I never play it for my stream because they’re not the audience for it so I keep it personal. Only my close friends know about this.
