Check Out Maya Davenport’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Davenport.

Hi Maya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Maya Davenport, I am from Atlanta, Georgia and I graduated from Alabama A&M University with a degree in Family & Consumer Sciences and a concentration in Fashion Design. My whole life I’ve had a passion for colors and textures of any form. My outlet for my creativity is through fashion, which I’ve always been very passionate about. I chose to become a fashion designer because I want to make women of all shapes, sizes and colors feel beautiful through the clothes that I create. I realize how difficult it can be to express your inner beauty and uniqueness in a world of feeling as if you have to conform to certain beauty standards. It can be overwhelming for some women to find a place for themselves. I want to create a safe space for all types of women to feel as if they can be true to themselves. Maya Nicole is not an average woman. She is fierce. She is humble. She is a creative. She can be misunderstood but she will always stand out.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I believe that having a business will never be smooth sailing. You are constantly learning and growing throughout the process and the process is never ending. I struggled in the beginning with finding out who my brand really is. It took me to do a lot of self-reflecting, soul searching and learning to realize who my brand is and where I want to take it. Being a creative is like having a mind full of ideas but not knowing exactly where to place them. That being said my biggest struggle so far has been just in believing in myself, my capabilities and also my brand.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create custom-made pieces that completely reflect who I am as an individual. I can be spontaneous, expressive, unique and also quiet, thoughtful and reserved. All of these qualities can be seen in my garments. I specialize in lounge, day and after dark attire. The unique part about my designs are that they can be worn in any way. None of my pieces can be worn for only one purpose. I like to create pieces that can be worn in different ways and with different looks. I also love to use quality material that is unique and comfortable. What sets me apart from other designers is that I am able to utilize colors and textures in any form and create a beautiful garment that complements anyone who wears it.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for anyone pursuing a career in fashion design would to be to stay true to who you are and to let that reflect in your pieces. Everyone is different in their own way and that is what makes being a fashion designer so special. You can think of any idea from your mind and create art. I also would advise anyone pursuing a career in fashion design to post their work no matter how they feel about their pieces. Do not hide your talent. The world needs to see the talents that god has gifted you with. I wish I had the confidence that I have now in the beginning stages of starting my brand. Confidence is key when being in the fashion industry especially when it comes to networking and marketing yourself. There are so many brands out there so you have to be comfortable in promoting your business and wearing your pieces!
