Check Out Rita Sands-Mahoney’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Sands-Mahoney

Hi Rita, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in Boligee, Alabama, I was drawn to the magic of entertainment from a very young age. I eagerly participated in school talent shows, and I embraced every opportunity to perform– whether it was in front of a crowd or even the cows on my grandfather’s farm. Performing brought me joy, and knew early on that I wanted to make my mark in the entertainment industry. I was determined to turn that dream into a reality.

After moving to Atlanta, fate stepped in when I came across a film set right across the street. Without hesitation, I took a chance, walked onto the set, and signed up as an extra—an experience that ignited my journey in entertainment.

As the daughter of civil rights activist Geraldine Sands and someone raised in a Christian home, I was taught to always put God first. I developed a deep appreciation for justice and the transformative power of storytelling. I’ve always believed that our stories are best told by us-and that belief is what
fueled my passion of launching a production company.

In 2017, I turned that vision into reality by founding Little Skipp Productions LLC. My mission is to create bold, thought-provoking, and engaging content. I collaborate with screenwriters, music producers, and artists to bring fresh, compelling stories to life. Through my company, I am dedicated to amplifying emerging voices and producing work that leaves a lasting impact.

With over a decade in the industry, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside top talent and producers. As I continue this journey, I remain committed to bringing innovative storytelling to the entertainment world—one project at a time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced numerous challenges while working on my first project, from securing locations to fundraising and finding financial support. In the beginning, gaining traction was difficult, but long conversations with God and my sister, Latonya Cox, kept me on the right track. With the unwavering support of friends and family, I pushed forward, determined to bring our first client, Sherry Bell-Bradley’s, vision to life.

To make it happen, I had to wear many hats—set designer, props master, caterer, editor, producer, acting coach—you name it, I did it. But I wasn’t alone. My dedicated team—Theopania Darnice, Arnisha Gresham, Shaunte Murphy, Sherrie Bell, Jessica Sands, Asteney Banks, Datrick Davis, Pamela Smith, Darryl Antwine, Clifford Saxton, Alexis Weaver, and Sade Ladega—came together with passion and commitment to achieve something incredible.

In just five days of filming, we completed Trepidation, a feature film written and directed by Sherry Bell-Bradley. This project stands as a testament to the power of determination, teamwork, and the belief that passion can turn dreams into reality.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an actor, I’ve had the privilege of working on a diverse range of exciting projects across both stage and screen. My theater credits include Who Killed Uncle Pete?, Is Uncle Pete Really Dead?, The Glory Train, Grace and Mercy, and Jack Leg Preacher. On the film and television side, I’ve appeared in productions such as Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, The Blind Side, Daddy’s Little Girls, BMF, and Fight Night. One of my most unforgettable experiences was being part of the 2006 Black Movie Awards, where I had the opportunity to work alongside Tyler Perry.

Most recently, I’ve been involved in the TV series Strange Things and Beauty in Black, as well as the movie Straw and The Cycle 2. Now, as the founder of Little Skipp Productions LLC, I’m stepping into the world of feature filmmaking. Our debut project, Trepidation, features me in the role of Mrs. White, and we are eagerly anticipating its network premiere.
