Today we’d like to introduce you to Romie Robertson.
Romie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m an educator and travel writer. My work centers around budget travel with a historical and cultural context. I’m passionate about budget travel because I believe that experiencing the world should be accessible for everyone, not just the privileged few. My website, roamingwiththerobertsons.com, is where I house my travel blogs. Sometimes I write about affordable things to do, sometimes I write about what I learned of a destination, and other times I write about reflections I’ve had while traveling. I’m also into photography and working on growing my skills as a photographer.
I consider myself as a citizen of the world. I received my first passport at six months old because I would visit family in Germany with my mother. As a young child, I was already exposed to the level of newness that travel brings. I continued visiting Germany and surrounding countries throughout my childhood and adolescence. Then, when I was in college, I studied abroad in London. I was inspired by older classmates to travel while studying abroad and that’s exactly what I did. This was in 2016 and is when the travel bug truly bit me. Since then, I’ve tried to travel as much as I can. I travel to learn, to share, and to experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not always a smooth road. For one, the Covid-19 pandemic threw a curveball to most people, especially those in the travel and tourism industry. Other challenges include navigating finances (especially trying to balance money spent on travel vs. saving and investing), visas, and other roadblocks that naturally occur when being abroad.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a travel blogger that specializes in affordability, history, and culture. When I’m in other countries, I aim to have as much of a local experience as possible. I try to meet locals, spend time with them, and learn their stories. Though not always feasible, I ask myself, “What can I do here that I can’t do anywhere else?” and try to do exactly that. I’m proud that I try to learn more about a place than what’s typically seen in its tourism.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is experiencing the connection that brings all living things together; to understand how humans, animals, plants, and other matter all share a similar energy that existed in this world before we got here and will exist long after we depart. I believe that this is the experience that the creator(s) of this universe wants us to have. For me, I experience this energy while traveling and teaching.
