Today we’d like to introduce you to Sook Jin Hyun.
Hi Sook Jin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Hyun Sook Jin. I was born in South Korea and moved to Argentina after finishing high school. I am a professional barista and currently work at Brunch at Peony, where my husband is the chef and one of the owners.
I truly love what I do. I’m passionate about everything related to coffee and café culture, and I enjoy keeping up with trends while blending different cultures into my coffee creations. For me, coffee is a way to connect people and share stories through flavor.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like everyone else, nothing in life comes easy. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but those challenges are what helped shape who I am today. I’ve been incredibly grateful for my husband’s support—he believed in me, stood by my side, and helped open doors along the way.
I’m truly proud of my family. Without their love and encouragement, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been drawn to creative work. Before becoming a barista, I worked as a professional fashion pattern maker for many years. During that time, I developed a deep interest in the world of coffee—the exotic flavors, aromas from different beans, espresso machines, and latte art all fascinated me.
Even at home, I would make espresso every morning with my own equipment. Eventually, I had the opportunity to formally study coffee, and with my family’s support, I earned an international barista certification. I then began sharing my humble knowledge at Brunch at Peony. I still feel there’s so much more to learn, but I’m grateful that customers recognized my effort. Over time, I’ve built a loyal group of regulars who appreciate my style.
At first, becoming a professional barista and working with the public was intimidating—I never imagined I would make it this far. Now I’m here, still growing, still learning, but encouraged every day by customers who tell me I’m the best barista in the area. I’m deeply thankful to everyone who supports and trusts me, and I’m proud of myself for reaching this point despite the challenges.
I don’t consider myself better than other baristas. I’m simply someone who works with passion and love for what I do. I believe that those who value that sincerity will naturally recognize it.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I come from Buenos Aires, a fast-paced metropolitan city. Now I live in Alpharetta and work in Suwanee, Georgia. As someone who loves nature, living in this area truly feels like a dream. In my free time, I enjoy biking on the Greenway, and I love that the mountains are less than an hour away. My husband and children love it here too.
I’ve also been deeply touched by the warmth of the people. Customers always bring positive energy and encouragement, which gives me strength every day. Honestly, I can’t think of anything negative about this city—I’m simply grateful for everything.
Oh, and one more thing—I love the squirrels too.
