Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Savory Sweet & The Garden.
Hi Tori, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As long as I can remember, food has always been a major part of my life. Family dinners, trying new restaurants, celebrations, food was always a focal point. As a hobby, my father made wine, catered events, and my brother has a passion for cooking as well. After my grandmother retired, her and my mother would bake goods, pack the goods in baskets, and sell them to local businesses around Metro Atlanta. This idea was fueled from the love my great grandmother had of growing food and baking. After years of selling these goods every weekend, we opened Sweet Blessings Bakery in Decatur, GA. The bakery was open for 15 years selling cakes, pies, cookies, cobblers, and puddings. Throughout this journey, I was there every step of the way.
I was never forced to help; it was just something I have always had an interest in. Food has always been exciting for me.
When I went off to college, I was blessed to stay in a dorm that was fully functional for cooking and after my first year I moved into an off-campus apartment. At some point in my college career, I found myself depressed, and one of the only things I looked forward to was making a grocery list to shop on Sundays, preparing a meal I loved, while catching a new episode of housewives. This brought me joy. After years of not posting on social media, I had a thought one day that maybe I should post my food. I was still nestled away in my depression, and I didn’t want to be seen, but my food was a way I felt comfortable expressing myself. I started off posting meals I prepared, then I began experimenting with cocktails and desserts. After almost seven years of posting food, some things have changed. I have reduced the amount of meat products I consume, and although I still cook everyday, I don’t film my cooking as much. While managing a full-time career, I’ve found restaurant reviews to be more manageable.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Confidence. Confidence in myself has been my greatest challenge, and not letting temporary circumstances/feelings, or outside opinions affect my progress.
My career and my life belong to me, and I have learned to embrace that knowing, as I have not chosen the “conventional route.” I have learned to lean into my inner voice and carve out a path that suits my deepest desires.Years ago, a professor by the name of Dr. Lisa Shannon lectured to a class I attended, saying that it is important we know who our people are. Those words stuck with me because knowing who you come from can influence you to embrace who you are.
Today, I am a woman who embraces all parts of me. My desires, passions, and interest surrounding food is not a coincidence, it’s in my blood, and it’s who I am.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
For years I have really enjoyed Earn Your Leisure (EYL) podcast. There is a ton of information surrounding investing, managing capital, and business.
