Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyson Lowe.
Hi Tyson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always had a passion for content creation when it came to sports. Growing up, people always used to tell me that I would be a great sports commentator because I was always talking about sports with my homies or in class when I should’ve been paying attention to the lesson. However, it wasn’t until I realized that I wasn’t gonna go to college on the sports scholarship I dreamed of growing up that I picked up a camera and started taking pictures around my hometown (Albany, GA) and my high school (Lee County High School). That was cool and I did that until I officially stopped playing football my senior year but it didn’t fully encapsulate what I wanted to do. I watched creators like Kenny Beecham, the pod formerly known as Through the Wire (now Numbers on The Board), Legend Of Winning and a multitude of other creators on Youtube. Taking pictures was cool but I wanted to showcase my personality and opinions. So in 2022, I started my Youtube channel “Word of Mouth” where I started covering various topics floating around the NBA. I had some videos do very well in my first couple of months so I used it as motivation to keep going. I eventually started covering the NFL and college sports as well and that has been very well received but with the rise of short form content, I had to tap into that as well if I wanted to see real success. So I started to see creatives around Atlanta like “ATL Metro Sports” exploring the talent in our own backyard, Atlanta, GA. So in February & March I covered the GHSA State Playoffs and that was the most success I had seen across all platforms after 4 years. Now today, I’m just trying to build on top of this and I got some big things planned.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it wasn’t smooth at all. When I first started, I received a lot of support but some people would talk about how high my voice was, how I talked, and that was really it but that did kinda get to me a little bit. Then when I got to college my uploading slowed down a lot and I would go months without uploading. It was hard for me to adjust to my new college schedule and lifestyle (as a Computer Science Major I might add). So it was a lot to balance and I stopped being consistent and my content quality suffered as well. It really wasn’t until last year where I was able to get back consistent and uploading like how I did pre college. Recently, It’s been more so about figuring out what is going to work and take my content to another level which is hard to do with sports and media always changing but I’m starting to get it together now.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Content Creator who specializes in covering basketball and football from the high school level all the way to the professional levels. I’m most proud of being given the opportunity to go on House of Highlights and be featured in one of their Fan vs. Hater Episodes. Going to New York and meeting content creator I watch in real life THEN filming a video for a company I’ve been watching since high school was surreal. My personality and the authenticity in all of my videos sets me apart from other people in my space. It’s a lot of great creators out here and I love their content but they’re not me. I bring a certain level of charisma and genuine opinions that are my own. I feel like some content creators try to look at other people and emulate them and what they do but I don’t. There are certain thing I see and I actually admire but I try to take them and put my own twist on them and that’s gotten me to where I am now.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Honestly, just be yourself and try. If you are authentically yourself throughout your whole journey, you will enjoy it more and people will like you more. No one like people who try to be something they aren’t and people will notice if you aren’t being genuine. The second thing is try. Content is trial and error so get creative and try new things and ideas that come to mind. If it works, then you got a hit and you should capitalize on that. If it flops then don’t get down on yourself, take some lessons from it. You would rather try something and it not work than to spend the rest of your life wondering if you would have tried it, would it work at all. Oh and be consistent, ESPECIALLY when starting out. It’s hard because the numbers will be low and the analytics won’t be favorable but just keep trying and uploading on a consistent basis so you can figure out what works for you and so people can start to see you more.
