Today we’d like to introduce you to Young Gattas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Chicago and got accustomed to hearing a variety of music every weekend with my grandparents, from oldies to country and rock! Growing up in Chicago isn’t the easiest due to gang violence so my mother took it upon herself to move us to Indianapolis during my high school career, before then it was a lot of back and forth between the cities. Once settled in Indianapolis, I honed in on my battle rap skills in the lunchroom & was noticed by the likes of Drect & Sonny Bamboo who are pillars in the battle rap community. It seemed like after my first GRINDTIMENow battle everything fell into place. I had the opportunity to battle globally and professionally as one of the first female battle rappers & grace some of the biggest stages in the culture, but even with all the success in battle rap, I knew music was my first love & always found myself coming back to creating music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely been everything but a smooth road! I’ve encountered a lot of bias being a masculine presenting woman in a male-dominated industry as well as bias from being a woman in general, but like all the struggles I’ve encountered, I learn and keep on pushing! That resilience is a superpower in my eyes.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an artist/songwriter first & a battle rapper second. I specialize in putting words together in an unorthodox way that also appeals to the masses. I feel what sets me apart from others is my aggression & wordplay… I think outside the box always wanting to create something innovative and new instead of replicating what’s already available.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I’d say my advice to an upcoming artist would be BELIEVE IN YOURSELF FOREVER! Invest in your craft & never let anyone deter you from your dreams!
