Check Out Zahion Mikell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zahion Mikell.

Hi Zahion, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in leadership and service began in Georgia, specifically in Douglas County, where I was involved in my school’s Student Government Association. That experience helped me discover my passion for serving others, representing student voices, and making a difference in my community.

Later, I moved to DeKalb County, where I continued growing as a leader by serving on my area superintendent’s Student Advisory Council. There, I gained valuable experience in advocacy, communication, and working with others to create change.

Eventually, I returned to my second home, Clayton County, where my leadership journey continued through the Jonesboro Youth City Government. I’ve had the honor of serving in multiple roles, including City Manager, Councilman, and now as the 3rd Youth Mayor and first Black African American male to hold the position.

Today, I continue using my platform to inspire young people, advocate for my community, and show that leadership is about service, dedication, and creating opportunities for others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. My journey has come with many challenges, especially after joining the Jonesboro Youth City Government. When I first became involved, it was a program that lacked structure and was still working to build the systems and organization needed to operate effectively. That created challenges when it came to leadership, communication, and moving initiatives forward.

Along the way, I also had to navigate working with people who could sometimes be rude, dismissive, or resistant to change. Those experiences were not always easy, but they taught me resilience, patience, and how to remain professional under pressure.

Every obstacle helped shape me into a stronger leader. I learned that real leadership is not just about titles it is about staying committed, solving problems, and continuing to serve even when the road gets difficult.
