Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Mays.
Hi Adrienne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Eight years ago, I had my son and I never saw him. I worked in the insurance industry and you never had time to be with your family. I am a single mother and I just couldn’t do it anymore. My father gave me an opportunity to work for him so I could be a stay at home mom. A year or after I started working for my dad, my son was diagnosed with autism. GA is very slow with providing resources for children on the spectrum so his therapies were very expensive. His father never helped with the extra expensive for his treatments and my son wasn’t progressing as he needed to be, I had to figure out a way to cover the cost of it all. Upon doing my research on autism, I noticed that many articles expressed the lack of opportunity for individuals on the spectrum to gain employment and maintain employment. My wheels being to turn on how I can create something for my son and others like him. Also to help earn extra income to help him get the treatments he needs to thrive. Since it was and still is a great shortage in therapists to assist kids like my son, I went back to school to gain my degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis.
I took $300 and created Recycle Me Mom, LLC. I started out with my Cricut and made Greek tees for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc and the company grew from there. I was able to hire individuals that are on the spectrum and with my degree I am able to help guide them on ways to interact with individuals, learn a trade, and so much more. But the most valuable lesson for them is the interaction with individuals. Every day I get to see growth in them and see them gain so much confidence in themselves it is truly amazing. At the beginning it was rough and I had many doubts, but I stay with it and kept on PUSHING. I’m truly thankful that I can provide an opportunity for my employees and my son when he gets older.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Any new venture isn’t easy. I remember so many would put me down and my vision. But that was the fuel to keep me going. Also it was a testament to show my future employees at the time that we all struggle and have doubters but it how you overcome those obstacles is what matters. Right now is one of my biggest struggles with managing my dad’s business while he is battling stage 4 cancer, managing my business, and caring for my son who is on the spectrum. But by God grace and mercy I’m getting it done.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
