Community Highlights: Meet Angela Richards of New York Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Richards.

Hi Angela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in Germany, but it truly started the day I stepped off the plane in the United States in 2000. I arrived with big hopes—and very little English. I still remember how overwhelming everything felt. Simple conversations, paperwork, even everyday tasks felt unfamiliar. I didn’t just have to learn a new language—I had to learn a completely new way of life.

There was no roadmap. I had to figure things out on my own, grow up quickly, and become independent. It wasn’t always easy, but early on I made a decision: I wouldn’t let uncertainty define my future.

I started working part-time in the accounting department of a trucking company while continuing my education. Numbers became my universal language while my English caught up. That foundation led me into the mortgage industry, where I spent 11 years building my career in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

But it was during that time that something else started to grow—my entrepreneurial mindset.

I began to realize I didn’t just want to work within a system—I wanted to build something of my own. After the mortgage industry, I stepped into entrepreneurship and started testing the waters in different ways. I developed a software training company, launched an event planning business, created a clothing line, and even organized summer camps.

Each of those experiences taught me something different—how to connect with people, how to solve problems, how to build from nothing, and how to adapt when things didn’t go as planned.

Eventually, I found my footing in the insurance space. I earned my adjuster license and launched my mobile notary company, Angela Sign & Docs, which I built from the ground up. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a successful and stable business—one that allowed me to truly understand client needs and the importance of trust and reliability.

But I knew I wanted to go deeper.

I didn’t just want to be part of transactions—I wanted to be part of people’s long-term security and financial future. That desire led me to obtain my life insurance license and ultimately bring me to New York Life.

Today, as a financial professional with New York Life, I help individuals, families, and business owners protect what they’ve worked so hard to build and create long-term financial strategies designed to last.

Whether it’s personal protection, wealth accumulation, or planning for the future of a business, my focus is on developing solutions that provide stability, clarity, and confidence—not just for today, but for the years ahead.

Through every chapter—immigrant, employee, entrepreneur, and now advisor—one thing has remained constant: resilience. I’ve learned that growth comes from stepping into the unknown, and success comes from continuing forward, even when the path isn’t clear.

And while I’m proud of everything I’ve built professionally, my greatest accomplishment is being a mother to my daughter, who is now in college. She has been my “why” through it all. Everything I’ve done has been about showing her what strength, independence, and perseverance look like.

My story is about starting with uncertainty and building with intention. It’s about not letting fear make your decisions, and about continuing to evolve into the person you’re meant to become.

If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s this: where you start does not determine where you can go—but having the right guidance along the way can make all the difference.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road.

Although I was always a U.S. citizen—I was born in Germany—moving to the United States in 2000 felt like stepping into a completely unfamiliar world. Legally, this was my country. But culturally, socially, and professionally, I had to learn everything from the ground up.

I barely spoke English with confidence. German was my first language, and I had to adjust not only to a new system, but to an entirely different way of life.

One of the most eye-opening challenges was understanding identity in America. Growing up in Europe, my experience with cultural differences was very different. When I came here, I began to see how much things like accents, background, and perception could influence how people are treated.

There were moments when I felt different. Moments when I felt misunderstood. Moments when I realized I would have to work harder to prove myself.

That wasn’t easy.

But instead of letting those experiences limit me, they shaped me. They built my resilience, strengthened my confidence, and deepened my empathy. They helped form the leader and businesswoman I am today.

Then came the professional challenges—navigating 11 years in the mortgage industry and experiencing the real estate crash in Atlanta firsthand. Reinventing myself. Starting businesses from scratch. Taking financial risks. Learning through both wins and setbacks.

Entrepreneurship may look exciting from the outside—but behind it are sleepless nights, uncertainty, doubt, and constant growth.

And through it all, I was raising my daughter—determined to show her what strength, independence, and perseverance look like in real life.

So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road.

But every obstacle refined me.
Every setback prepared me.
Every reinvention elevated me.

And today, I don’t see those struggles as barriers—I see them as qualifications.

We’ve been impressed with New York Life, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work with individuals, families, business owners, and entrepreneurs helping them gain clarity and confidence around their financial lives. Many people know they need a plan—but they’re overwhelmed or unsure where to start. That’s where I come in.

I focus on protecting income, building long-term wealth, and creating strategies that prepare my clients for both expected milestones and life’s unexpected moments. But more importantly, I simplify the process. Finances can feel complicated and intimidating, so I break things down in a way that’s clear, practical, and tailored to each person’s life and goals.

What sets me apart is how I approach my clients. I’m not here to push products or offer one-size-fits-all advice. I take the time to truly understand what matters most to you and build a strategy around that. My work is deeply relationship-driven—I’m here for the long term, not just a single transaction.

I also work closely with business owners, helping them develop strategies that support both their personal financial goals and the growth and protection of their business. It’s about creating alignment between what they’re building today and the future they want to sustain.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. People often come to me feeling uncertain or overwhelmed, and over time, they become more confident, more informed, and more in control of their financial decisions. Being part of that transformation is what drives me.

I want people to know that working with me is about more than finances—it’s about having someone in your corner who genuinely cares about your growth, your security, and your future.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is making a real, lasting impact in people’s lives. I don’t take it lightly that people trust me with something as important as their financial future.

For me, it’s bigger than numbers or policies—it’s about helping someone feel secure, confident, and in control of their life. That shift—going from uncertainty to clarity—is powerful.

But what truly drives me goes deeper than that.

As someone who had to start over, adapt, and build a life from the ground up, I understand how important stability and opportunity are. I know what it feels like to want something better—not just for yourself, but for the people you love.

That’s why I care so much about the work I do.

I care about building real relationships and being someone my clients can rely on long-term. Knowing that I’ve helped someone protect their family, create a plan, or move closer to the life they envision—that’s what motivates me every day.

And as a mother, that purpose is even more personal. Everything I’ve built has been about creating a better future and setting an example of what’s possible through resilience, hard work, and intention.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about finances—it’s about helping people feel secure in their present and confident about their future.
