Today we’d like to introduce you to April Heffner.
Hi April , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m April, founder of Onyx and Arrow Collective. What started as a deep love for my own wedding experience quickly turned into something much bigger—a calling. After leaving behind a corporate path that never quite fit, I stepped into the world of weddings, where I discovered my true purpose: capturing moments that matter and preserving love stories in a meaningful way.
Nine years later, that vision has grown into a bi-coastal brand supported by a team of nearly 20 creatives. Together, we’ve documented over 1,300 love stories—each one a reflection of why I started in the first place.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Each year has brought new challenges—moments that felt overwhelming at the time. From the growing pains of building and leading a team to personal hardships that inevitably impacted client experiences, every obstacle has become a lesson.
Through it all, my faith in God and trust in His plan have carried me forward. I’ve come to understand that even in the hardest seasons, there is always growth—and something greater waiting on the other side.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Onyx and Arrow Collective, we specialize in capturing love stories in a way that feels both intentional and deeply personal. We are a bi-coastal wedding photography and videography collective, known for blending elevated artistry with a client-centered experience. Our work goes beyond documenting a wedding day—we focus on preserving the emotion, energy, and meaning behind each moment so our couples can relive it for years to come.
What sets us apart is the experience we create. With nearly a decade in the industry and over 1,300 weddings captured, we’ve built a team of almost 20 creatives who are aligned not just in skill, but in heart. Every client is cared for with a high level of communication, professionalism, and intention—because we understand how important these moments are.
We’re especially known for our ability to balance artistry with reliability. Our couples trust us not only for beautiful imagery, but for the peace of mind that comes from working with a team that truly has their back throughout the entire process.
What I’m most proud of is the brand we’ve built—one that has grown organically through trust, relationships, and consistently showing up with excellence. Onyx and Arrow Collective is more than a vendor; we are a team that values connection, faith, and purpose, and that is reflected in everything we do.
At the end of the day, we want our couples to feel seen, celebrated, and fully present—knowing their story is being captured with care.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the wedding photography industry is moving in a much more intentional direction over the next 5–10 years—less about perfection, and more about meaning.
We’re already seeing a shift toward authenticity and storytelling. Couples are no longer drawn to overly posed, “perfect” images—they want their day captured as it truly felt. Documentary-style coverage, candid moments, and emotionally driven imagery will only continue to grow in demand.
At the same time, there’s a strong movement toward personalization. Weddings are becoming more unique and experience-driven, and photography is evolving alongside that. Couples want their galleries to feel like them—not like anyone else’s wedding.
Technology will also continue to play a role, especially with AI streamlining workflows like editing and culling. But interestingly, as technology advances, the human element becomes even more valuable. A photographer’s eye, intuition, and ability to connect with people will matter more than ever.
We’re also seeing the rise of hybrid coverage—photography, videography, and real-time content creation all working together. Couples want both timeless imagery and immediate, shareable moments, which is reshaping how teams operate on a wedding day.
Overall, the industry is becoming more experience-driven. It’s not just about delivering beautiful photos—it’s about how clients feel throughout the entire process. The brands that prioritize connection, trust, and a seamless experience will be the ones that continue to stand out.
