Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Merriweather.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, it all started as a kid, sweeping up hair at this local barbershop back home in Chicago called “Brand New Man.” Just by picking up on little thing in the shop sparked an interest, which made me find love for the craft. Now fast-forward all the way up to my sophomore year in college at the University of Kentucky, that’s what made me take it more serious. As a student on campus, you always wanted to stay fresh and I notice that there was no barbers on campus. Then a light bulb popped on like, “hmm, I know a little bit about cutting hair, Let me work my magic.”
So I started cutting my own hair and a couple of my home boy’s hair and that’s how it started. I build up a clientele on campus. I started cutting some basketball & Football player’s hair, and even my professors on campus. Those same professors help encouraged me to go and get my barbers license and open up a barbershop. So after I graduated from the University of Kentucky, I moved to Atlanta and enrolled into CEI Hair School. When I first started barber school, that’s when I found an even deeper love for the craft. I learned a lot from those instructors and the #1 thing I took away was to always keep learning something new everyday always keep learning. Even if its not about barbering, could be about bettering yourself in life, starting another business or even learning the stock market, just keep learning. So after I completed my 1500 hours, I was ready to get into a Shop and learn even more. In-School, they always said you gone learn more once you start cutting at the shop, so I wanted to start working at the best shop in Atlanta, amongst the top Barbers and Stylist, and came across a shop called Cut Creaters Salon Suites. That’s where I’m at today. I builded a buzz around the city, which made me open up a Barber suite and from here I want to build a team full of ambitious barbers and stylist like myself, that’s hungry, that’s ready to make a huge impact in the hair industry and that has an entrepreneur spirit like myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s always some bumps and bruises in the road that I had to overcome. One thing my momma always told me was to never worry about nothing and leave all your worries in the hands of the lord. I don’t even know where to start; I struggled a lot especially being in a new city, but one thing for sure I never gave up. I used my pain and my struggles as a crutch, to help me get closer to my dreams, to help me keep moving, keep going and to never stop…. never give up on yourself… cause at the end of the day… that’s all you got… 1 head up & 10 toes does!!! Always keep it real with yourself!!! Trust God love your family.
